In my yard we sometimes put remains of various types of meat on a cement step when the two adult cats that live with us don't show up. Then they show up, eat the remains and leave some that they do not consume, such as hard bones.

It always happens that the remains leave fat dripping on the ground. In this regard, I observed that several wasps appeared at the place of the remains and some of them were consuming the fat.

The remains were chicken and two wasps perched on a small piece of it.
Los restos eran de pollo y sobre un trocito se posaron dos avispas.
Then another wasp perched on another small piece.
Luego sobre otro trocito se posó otra.
There was a piece of chicken that was the biggest and other wasps also started to perch on it. I kept watching and photographing that piece to see what they were doing, and what I noticed was that they were not eating but cutting small pieces of chicken to take with them.
Había un trozo de pollo que era el más grande y sobre el también se empezaron a posar otras avispas. Me quedé observando y fotografiando ese trozo para ver que era lo que hacían, y lo que noté es que no estaban comiendo sino cortando pequeños pedazos de pollo para llevárselos.
In the following photograph you can see the wasp on the right side and above, with a small piece of chicken ready to fly away.
En la siguiente fotografía se puede ver a la avispa en el lado derecho y arriba, con un pequeño pedazo de pollo lista para alzar el vuelo.
Something I noticed is that these wasps in their action of cutting the small pieces did it with a lot of force and moved from different angles looking for the best position for the cut.
Algo que noté es que esas avispas en su acción de cortar los pequeños pedazos lo hacían con mucha fuerza y se movían desde distintos ángulos buscando la mejor posición para el corte.
In the same place there was also a piece of chicken bone and the wasps were not only looking to extract the meat from the chicken but also the pulp from the bone.
En el mismo sitio también había un pedazo de hueso de pollo y las avispas no solo buscaban extraer la carne del pollo sino además la pulpa del hueso.
About these wasps I comment that they belong to the tribe Epiponini, which has 20 genera of social wasps that include more than 200 species. This tribe is dominant in the Neotropics from northern Texas in the United States to southern Argentina.

Among the genera of the tribe, the third largest is the genus Agelaia, which includes 29 species. All known species of Agelaia have both queen and worker wasps, and exhibit caste dimorphism, with queens being larger than workers and also darker. All the ones I photographed are workers.

Agelaia is one of only two genera of the tribe Epiponini in which they are known to collect carrion among provisions to feed larvae.

More specifically, the wasps in the photographs belong to the species Agelaia multipicta, which has a black and yellow pattern.

After a while it occurred to me to try to get them to eat in my hand to see if I could photograph them better as they flew away with a small piece of chicken.

Then it occurred to me to place the chicken bone in my hand as well, for the same purpose.

Among wasps that came and went, they went away because they were disturbed by the flies, I waited for a while and a wasp was making a lot of effort to extract a small piece of pulp from the bone.
Entre avispas que iban y venían, se iban porque era pertubadas por las moscas, esperé un rato y una avispa hacía mucho énfasis en extraer un trocito de pulpa del hueso.
That wasp was able to extract a small piece of the pulp from the bone and I was able to capture the moment when it flew away; in the following photograph you can see it.

Other wasps came and continued working, but not on the bone, and the last one that stayed was able to extract a small piece of chicken, but I did not capture the moment.

I comment that, the Agelaia yepocapa wasp nests in hollow trees, builds unenveloped nests in sheltered or enclosed places, and in one nest there can be up to 4,000 wasps.

Many wasps in their nests, when attacked by ants, quickly abandon the nest and migrate in a swarm to another location where they build a new nest. However, Agelaia yepocapa wasps, although they defend their nest by hitting ants with their mandibles, end up clustering near the nest waiting till the ants are gone and then return to their nest.
Muchas avispas en sus nidos, cuando son atacadas por hormigas, abandonan rápidamente el nido y migran en un enjambre a otro lugar donde construyen un nuevo nido. Sin embargo, las avispas Agelaia yepocapa, aunque defienden su nido golpeando a las hormigas con sus mandíbulas, terminan agrupándose cerca del nido esperando hasta que las hormigas se hayan ido y entonces luego regresan a su nido.
On the other hand, the cat in my house recently gave birth to three kittens. Another day, after the wasps were collecting chicken, my daughters were feeding sardines to the kittens on the same cement step. As they were handing out the sardine pieces, wasps of the same species quickly arrived and started to collect small pieces of sardines.

In the following photograph, at lower part, you can see a wasp that was able to extract a small piece of sardine, and in the next one it is not there because it flew away with the piece.

In conclusion, these wasps collect chicken and sardine. Why these wasps are necrophagous (eat dead or decaying flesh) is unknown, but it is known that the workers have a structural modification of the mandibles that may be associated with necrophagy; it is a dorsal tooth of the mandibles, which elongates into a acute, blade-like ridge that extends lengthwise. In other species of the tribe Epiponini the tooth does not develop into a acute ridge but forms an obtuse or blunt ridge.
En conclusión, estas avispas recolectan pollo y sardina. El por qué estas avispas son necrófagas (comen carne muerta o en descomposición) se desconoce, pero si es conocido que las obreras tienen una modificación estructural de las mandíbulas que puede estar asociada a la necrofagia; es un diente dorsal de las mandíbulas, que se alarga formando una cresta aguda en forma de cuchilla que se extiende a lo largo. En otras especies de la tribu Epiponini el diente no se desarrolla en una cresta aguda sino que forma una cresta obtusa o roma.
