Today I bring you a story type post as part of the local history of my beloved town.
El Muerto del Alta Mar! // The Dead Man of the High Seas! [Esp/Eng].
En la Costa del Golfo de Cariaco en un pueblo llamado Mariguitar; allá un día 7 de octubre del año cincuenta y seis cuando se celebraban las fiestas de la patrona “ Virgen Señora del Rosario”. Era momentos de alegrias, el pueblo estaba entusiasmado en las calle porque ese día saldría la imágen religiosa a su tradicional paseo de esa festividad por toda la localidad.
On the Gulf Coast of Cariaco in a town called Mariguitar, on October 7, 1956, when the festivities of the patron saint "Virgen Señora del Rosario" were being celebrated. It was a time of joy, the people were excited in the streets because that day the religious image would go on its traditional walk around the town.
Un señor de 55 años de edad llamado Pedro Díaz residenciado en la localidad de cachamaure, era un hombre trabajador de la tierra, campesino labrador y de respeto por sus buenos oficios y su conducta amigable, donde todos los amigos de la localidad lo llamaban “ Cleto” como pronombre en esos tiempos.
A 55 year old man named Pedro Diaz residing in the town of Cachamaure, was a hard working man of the land, farmer farmer and respected for his good work and friendly behavior, where all friends of the town called him "leto" as a pronoun in those times.
Una tarde se dirigió a su faena a cosechar verduras y hortalizas para el sustento familiar y traer al pueblo y expender, al regresar de su conuco al rededor de la 5pm pasando un cruce de un río en los tiempos de lluvias lo toma de sorpresa la creciente e inmensa torrentes de aguas que bajaban de las montañas de esos lugares, arrastrandolo y llevado a la descarga de la desembocadura del mar produciendoles la muerte por ahogamiento.
One afternoon he went to his work to harvest vegetables for the family's sustenance and to bring to the village and to sell, when he returned from his farm at around 5pm passing a river crossing during the rainy season, he was taken by surprise by the rising and immense torrents of water that came down from the mountains of those places, dragging him and taking him to the discharge of the mouth of the sea, causing his death by drowning.
Cuentan los historiadores y testigos de ese hecho sucedido que a las 4 horas después de lo sucedido los familiares empiezan con la busqueda del señor Pedro, informando a los cuerpos de seguridad a la ayuda del monitoreo del cuerpo, informó también un campesino que lo vio pasar con un saco y unas veras cerca de su conuco en horas a finales de la tarde acabando de cesar la lluvia.
Historians and witnesses of this event tell that 4 hours after the event, family members began to search for Mr. Pedro, informing the security forces of the monitoring of the body, as well as a farmer who saw him passing by with a sack and some truths near his farm in the late afternoon when the rain had just stopped.
Durante el día siguiente la comunidad y los cuerpos de rescate comienzan la jornada de rastreo por los caminos a su conuco y quebredas del río, encontrando su sombrero de carrizo en un matorral y unos sacos vacios.
During the following day, the community and the rescue corps began a day of searching along the roads to his farm and along the river, finding his reed hat in a thicket and some empty sacks.
Fue un momento de angustia, tristeza y silencio por la desaparicion de este hombre que en el pueblo apreciaba mucho por su bondad, gentilicio y humildad.
It was a moment of anguish, sadness and silence for the disappearance of this man who was very much appreciated in the village for his kindness and humility.
El día 7 de octubre al atardecer regresaba una lancha sardinera llamada “ Beatriz”, el cual divisaron un cuerpo flotando en alta mar dandole rescate con una malla amarrandolo con unas cuerdas al lado de la lancha por su mal estado de descomposicion. Se dirigen rumbo al puerto real para entregar el muerto, recibiendolo el jefe civil, el comisario de la policia y sus familiares.
On October 7th at dusk, a sardine boat called "Beatriz" was returning, and they spotted a body floating in the open sea, rescuing it with a net and tying it with ropes to the side of the boat due to its bad state of decomposition. They headed to the royal port to deliver the dead body, receiving the civil chief, the police commissioner and his relatives.
Dice el jefe civil que el cuerpo estaba en muy mal estado y debía ser llevado directo al sepulcro emvuelto en lonas y sacos, alegando en ese instante el sepulturero que se no se iban hacer cargo de ese entierro por esa situación. Estando preso 3 pescadores ebrios por cometer una infracción grave en una plaza de esa localidad. El comisario de la policia les propone enterrar el cuerpo de Pedro a cambio de la libertad, donde ellos aceptan la propuesta y le piden una botella de ron puro para espantar los malos olores dandoles feliz sepultura a ese difunto.
The civil chief said that the body was in very bad condition and should be taken directly to the grave wrapped in tarps and sacks, alleging at that moment the gravedigger that they were not going to take care of the burial because of that situation. Three drunken fishermen were imprisoned for committing a serious infraction in a local square. The police commissioner proposes them to bury the body of Pedro in exchange for their freedom, where they accept the proposal and ask for a bottle of pure rum to scare away the bad smells and give them a happy burial to the deceased.
A partir de esos momentos los pescadores tenían un misterio de pescar en esos lugares, porque alegaban que era un lugar maldecido por no pescar ningún pescado o especie marina en ese lugar y al amenazar la lluvia en esos tiempos recogian sus rendales y se retiraban del mar por el hecho aquel que había ocurrido.
From that time on fishermen had a mystery of fishing in those places, because they claimed that it was a cursed place for not catching any fish or marine species in that place and when the rain threatened in those times they gathered their rendales and withdrew from the sea because of the fact that had occurred.
En una mañana toman una lancha unos familiares y pescadores y embarcan al padre José y la virgen de la localidad para realizar una misa en alta mar, para espantar los malos espiritus y darles descanso y paz al alma del muerto, el cuál después de allí cuentan los pescadores que ya pueden pescar con tranquilidad los peces y obtener abundante especies marinas para el comercio y la venta al el pueblo en sus sustento diarios. Ahora en el pueblo todo volvió a la calma, y dejaron de temerle al Muerto del Alta Mar.
One morning some relatives and fishermen took a boat and embarked Father José and the local virgin to perform a mass on the high seas, to scare away the evil spirits and give rest and peace to the soul of the dead, which after that the fishermen say that they can now fish with tranquility and obtain abundant marine species for trade and sale to the people in their daily sustenance. Now everything in the village is calm again, and they are no longer afraid of the Dead Man of the High Seas.
