Junk vs Bullion

in Silver Gold Stackers18 days ago (edited)

What is your silver of choice, junk silver or bullion? For us Canadians, the Canadian Maple is the bullion silver of choice, at least it is mine. For those with deeper pockets, it is the gold maple. Beautiful, but super pricey at the moment. I am also a fan of the American silver eagle, but partial to the maple for obvious reasons. Next we have the “junk silver”, also known as circulated currency. Up until 1967, our dollars, half dollars, quarters, and dimes were composed of 80% silver and 20% copper. Earlier currency was 92.5% silver. Down south in the US, the cut off was 1964, but the silver % was 90 instead of 80. As far as I know, the half dollars issued after 1964 were 40% silver for a few years. What is your silver of choice, and do your prefer to collect your own countries silver or foreign silver, or both?

I don't like the term junk for em , I love both would hate to pick one over the other but most of my stack is bullion but more so due to better prices I usually stumble on with bullion !BBH

how do you get better prices for bullion than for "junk" ?

Premiums for 10 or 100oz bars are smaller than dollars and half dollars, at least in my experiences.

Better prices for sure with bullion. But I like both.

They aren't fine silbver, and they don't have a numismatic premium, so my guess is the term "junk" is from before everything was cupro-nickel, and they were only worth literal pocket change. If you or anyone else knows better than my etymological guess here, let me know!

Gotta love junk silver, how much is a dime with a fish on it

Probably only a coupla bucks.

There are two varieties of the 1967 Mackeral; 80% silver worth $1.60USD and the 50% silver worth $1.00USD, the difference is the weight.

Yes, there were a few of them made for sure. Thanks for bringing that up.

As a coin collector first before stacker. I hate what is called junk silver. Collecting beautiful older coins is great but worn out shit coins should all be melted down.

I get that. I wouldn't lose any sleep meltin them down either really.

But that's just the point: if SHTF and we need precious metal coins for trade, the worn ones spend the same as the pretty ones.

Is this the present one? Maple leaf on silver looks nice.

They just released the 2024 a couple of months ago.

👏👏👏

I have a couple Candadian 80% dimes, and maybe a quarter, but since I'm south of you, US 90% junk silver is my preference. The premium on Silver Eagles just isn't justifiable right now IMHO.

Yeah, them premiums can be really high at times.

Nice, for me I collect any silver coins. I found many that are in circulation over the years but it is getting harder to find them in the wild. I've also purchased a lot of bullion coins, still have some Steemit ones haha. Have a great week ahead my friend.

Yeah, I still have one steemit coin too. Somewhere on the bottom of the pile though lol.

I'm about to start jumping into lovely junk silver <3 :D !

I also need a stack and "junk" silver is just the perfect start.

Will probably get some austrian schillings first :)

greets!

Any silver is good silver, mostly.

The U.S. Treasury will be offering special deals for our 90% Silver and Gold Coins, so I'll say your best bet would be what you called Junk... I doubt that the Special offers will be given for the Junk Silver coming out of other Countries, but who knows...???

Have to wait and see. Thanks for stopping by.

Wonderful pieces, @daveks !
I am from America; therefore, my go-to are the American Eagle (gold and silver) and US Constitutional Silver.
Glad to see you posting at #silvergoldstackers!

That makes sense, good to have a little of both!

Thanks for educating me, that is a nice little piece of history.

Just an amateur over here really.

For those with Deeper pocket, how expensive is the gold Maple? The black and white looked more beautiful this time

The gold maple in US dollars is around $2400 per coin

I love all silver, but the premiums always are much higher with the Maple Leaf's or the American Eagles. I have lot of junk silver too, but if the day ever comes you need to unload it, it's sometimes harder to find someone willing to pay a fair price on the "junk".

Color pictures are my favorite when it comes to coins. I love the post!

I like to focus on the ones that are most familiar to the average person. Maples/eagles or dollars, halves mostly canadian and some US halves.

Nice!! where do you buy in southern alberta?

Local contacts, otherwise silvergoldbull.ca

I hate the shipping there 😂

Silvergoldbull are the best.

Does it has a value nowadays?

Yes, currently silver is trading at about $27 US/oz. Them maple coins go for about $32 or so.

It's good to know. Our old coins here seems no value at all.

Your old coins from US and Spanish colonial rule (Peso, 20 & 50 centavos, etc.) should have a decent silver content.

None. It was gone. 😊

Same here. Silver Maple Leaf. Although I have several from the Privateer Collection 2oz rounds … they are beautiful…

Pretty coins!

its hard not to like maple leafs

Yep, exactly.

I like both. For silver bullion, I prefer the Canadian Maple coins as well. The ASE premiums are too high to justify it.

Eagles are nice, but premiums are quite high. Maples are my preferred choice.

The $5 Canada Silver maple leaf by far make up most of my core stack. Whereas, my junk silver stack is small in comparison.

I see, who doesn’t love maples..
