My First Coin From A Coin Shop

So I was in town today and going to help a friend on a job when I noticed a store that I have seen thousands of times over the last 20+ years and never noticed the whole name.

I knew they had Pokemon and sports cards because people always mentioned that, plus they have posters all over but I never noticed that it was now called Penny's Cards, Coins and Collectables.

This is how I always remembered it.

I never thought to take a photo inside but it was amazing. The right side had all of the coins and I couldn't believe how beautiful some of them were, (and how expensive).

I found one in my price range and it was glorious. I had forgotten to take my phone with me so I couldn't look anything up to see if I was getting ripped off but I didn't care. When I saw this coin, I had to have it.

It was $109.99 and when I said I would take it, he told me I could have it for a hundred. I accepted his lowball offer and grinned like a school boy as he put it in its packaging and handed it to me.

This is also the first time I didn't want to take the coin out of the plastic and play with it. I can tell it feels amazing by looking at it. This almost feels like some sort of a sickness. Since I got home and showed it to my wife, I told her to put it somewhere safe and have gone to look at it twice already. It has only been two hours.

I'm really happy that I bought this and I can see more in my future. Right now I have a cheque from the scrapyard for $118 and I will probably load up all of my aluminum and take it in so I can buy the $250 Snowflake coin. It was so beautiful but out of my price range. If only I had found the cheque before I bought The Caribou.

Nah, I would want to have them both anyhow. I can't believe how exquisite these coins are now and I wonder how they do it with the colours and crystals and all that. I see what @kerrislravenhill loves about these coins now. It's way different than just looking at photos of them. I thought that would be enough for me but being in that small shop changed it for me.

Sort:

A fine tribute to the long running 25 Cent Caribou since 1937.
Sweet! You've even knocked off $10 of the price tag too.
8500 mintage.
If you have to handle it outside it's capsule, use clean cotton gloves over a padded surface. You're new to opening capsules so I'd suggest practicing with a stunt coin double first.

I have taken the other coins out a lot but didn't wear gloves. I don't think I will take these out because I don't want to take the chance with my clumsy hands. I'm looking forward to using my scrap money to buy more coins. He had some sets of old Canadian coins that were $1500 and up but I don't like those that much. These special coins are fascinating though. I remember when the quarter came out with the coloured poppy and stuff and was amazed with how cool it was.

Do other countries have mints that produce unique sets like these? I remember trucking in the states many years ago and they had the state quarters that were pretty cool but they didn't have colour on them.

The RCM has been on the cutting edge experimenting with different coloring and hologram technologies over the last decade. I'm starting to see some colored coins coming from other countries over the last few years especially from Europe and the Pacific Islands.
