I'm not sure how regulated CB is in the States, here it's obviously quite regulated but I've heard it's not so much the case up there?

I hate to be "that guy," but Wikipedia has an overview including a table of channel assignments, whether legal or from convention
I don't know "what guy" you mean to be honest.
Anyway, it was @coinjoe who suggested, through a comment in this post, that he thought it was somewhat of a free for all on channel in the States. I don't live there, and never will, so have no clue, just reacted to what someone who does live there had said. I wasn't about to waste my time googling it.
As far as I know, channel 9 is the only reserved frequency stateside. There is also marine band radio, which also has no US license requirement, but I know even less about the regulations there.
Yeah as long as you stay off the emergency channel no one seems to enforce much of anything. Not sure anyone follows the regs.
I imagine few follow the rules.
