A Call for a Community Vote on Rewarding Threads Using the #freecompliments Tag

in FreeCompliments2 months ago (edited)

Repetitive Threads on InLeo’s Microblogging Platform

With the great help of @crazyphantombr, and as part of our monthly engagement contests, we’ve encountered a small number of users who post repetitive threads with little unique content. As part of our philosophy of rewarding all threads using the #freecompliments tag, we’ve continued rewarding these threads with votes and with HSBI for our monthly rewards. However, we figured that it would be a good idea to put the rewards to a community vote so that we can institute quality control via rewards without resorting to censorship.

I’m not going to post usernames, because none of this content is “bad” or written with bad intentions – it’s just repetitive. From our end, we’re not going to punish them in any way, because that’s not what we’re about. What we’re going to determine are rewards.

Here are some examples of the content we’re talking about:

See? Nothing illegal here, and some are actually nice sentiments. However, there’s basically no variation from these users.

Let’s Put This To a Vote!

I’m going to split this into a few options to determine what we should do. It’s going to involve other user activity, rewards via curation, and rewards via HSBI.

The first scenario is that a user posts repetitive Threads like this every day but also posts unique content with the #freecompliments tag (similar to how I post the same Mental Health Initiative threads every day, but also add other unique content).

  1. For users who post repetitive daily threads but also write other unique threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with tiny votes (1%) from our fc-leo-curator account?

  2. For users who post repetitive daily threads but also write other unique threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with HSBI for these threads when we calculate our monthly rewards?

Now, we’ll consider the scenario in which the user posts repetitive Threads like this every day without any other unique content using the #freecompliments tag.

  1. For users who only post repetitive daily threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with tiny votes (1%) from our fc-leo-curator account?

  2. For users who only post repetitive daily threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with HSBI for these threads when we calculate our monthly rewards?

I’ll put these questions to a vote in the comment section below and we’ll go with what the community decides.

My Personal Thoughts

I personally think that, as long as a user writes unique content with the #freecompliments tag, it’s ok to reward them with both votes and rewards (votes, HSBI) for repetitive daily threads. A user who does this may simply enjoy having a daily thread with a particular thought or theme, and that’s totally ok! They’ll still be contributing unique content on top of their usual daily thread. I’d say that I fit squarely into this category, both in terms of the mental health initiative and reusing some quotes I’ve written, but I also write unique content with the tag (but then again, I also don’t reward myself lol).

For those who simply post repetitive threads without other unique content, I’d veer on the side of not rewarding them HSBI for monthly rewards, but I’d be ok with giving them tiny (1%) votes on a daily basis, as long as it’s not exceeding once per day, which would be an anti-spam measure. The daily threads do help keep the tag trending, which is useful from a marketing perspective (thus bringing value), and are frankly totally harmless.

Conclusion

Let’s see what the FreeCompliments Community decides to do with repetitive threads in terms of curation and rewards. Your voice and opinion is very important and does matter, so I hope that you’ll participate in directing this community towards its best path. Thank you in advance for your participation!

(If you were tagged, it’s because you’re an inaugural member – please let me know if you don’t want to be tagged and I’ll stop, pronto!)

You really should consider not tagging everyone in these posts. It literally causes the Ecency app to crash. I don't mind being tagged but it's a considerable feat to get their app to crash just from sheer text volume. I shouldn't have to switch to PeakD in Keychain just to reply to this post.

My vote is no rewards of any kind for repetitive threads, regardless of whether they post other unique content or not. Spam is spam, and low effort, and should be discouraged. If you post repetitive garbage posts/threads, you lose out on any rewards you could've received for good content.

Great feedback on both counts! Noted.

I do have a question regarding the tagging, however: in this case, the tags were written only within a comment (not within the post, which contains a similar amount of text). I have noticed that ever since Ecency made updates to comment displays, they've been loading slower, albeit I haven't experienced any crashes. Have you been experiencing these instances over the past few weeks? If so, then it may be a frontend issue, as I've been doing tags for a long time.

If there's an alternative way to do the tagging, I'm certainly open to suggestions, but doing it within a post would likely be worse, and I still want to retain the tagging of inaugural members (which has remained steady for the past ~3 months - unless they opt out).

Thanks. 🙂

This has been going on as long as I've been following your posts. It happens on every post and not the comments.

I've not encountered the issue on other posts of similar length.

!BBH

Oh wait, so is it the post that doesn't load, or is it the comment with tags? I separated the tags from the post several months ago, so the post technically should not be affected.

I also forgot to send everyone here !PGM (I hope this project is revived soon!)

It's the post itself.

The comment with all the tags loads without issue.

Hmm, in that case maybe the tags aren't the problem.

Does it work fine for you using a browser? From a browser, the post loads on its own and then comments can be loaded by clicking on "comments." I do encounter difficulties with loading comments sometimes, of various length. I'm not sure how it works on the app.

@freecompliments! Your Content Is Awesome so I just sent 1 $BBH (Bitcoin Backed Hive) to your account on behalf of @bulliontools. (7/20)

I vote no rewards for any repetitive content. It might keep the hashtag trending, but will it keep people clicking on the trending hashtag? I tend to click on things I want to read :)

That said, if they only post it once a day, perhaps a little extra can be put on their unique content if the repetitive content is somewhat useful.

This post has been manually curated by the VYB curation project

This to be honest, it's not that hard to add a little bit of uniqueness even in some content that's repetitive. I think we should try to avoid that spammers take over and the community gets a bad name..

Or that the comments from the community are muted in other communities simply because of the huge amount of spam.. it would be a shame of the efforts @freecompliments..

Yup, very reasonable! To the 2nd point, this is only for Threads, so the "other community" aspect is not really relevant here.

I understand why you say that but these communities read on threads too. So my opinion remains the same :) LOL I get where you're coming from though..

!PIZZA

Ah, I see what you mean

Very sound reasoning, and an interesting idea regarding a way to balance things out when unique content is included! I'll keep this in mind.

Question 2: For users who post repetitive daily threads but also write other unique threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with HSBI for these threads when we calculate our monthly rewards?

definitely NO. HSBI should be rewarded to people who have long term goals on HIVE, and those are represented by their action such as threading and posting with some minimum criteria or requirement. an upvote, whether its tiny or big, is more than enough as a form of saying thank you

No for low effort again! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Question 3: For users who only post repetitive daily threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with tiny votes (1%) from our fc-leo-curator account?

Question 4: For users who only post repetitive daily threads, should their repetitive threads be rewarded with HSBI for these threads when we calculate our monthly rewards?

This is the same question as question 3, so also No

And to clarify why i've answered No for all the q's, as i've expressed before, i vote that votes/reward are only given to those making free compliments (or uptifting content of some sort).

The logic certainly makes sense here. By the way, I've already had a post drafted with your idea for a bit of time, and this is going to be my next question for the community!

Although I'm wondering: are you referring specifically to posts (where aiming a compliment at someone would be very easy) or threads (where aiming a compliment would more likely be contextual - I can see top-level threads with the tag being used for motivational quotes, uplifting content, positivity, etc.)? I'm personally on board with having all posts contain a compliment, but I think broadening the scope of short form content like Threads would be more beneficial.

yes, tiny upvote from leo curators usually get dusted anyway. they will receive nothing too.

It seems to me that question 3 and 4 are exactly the same, probably a case of a missing word to specify the question. I will wait for your response before answering those :)

I'm really not a fan of low effort and I think that there should always be some unique contribution whenever there's rewards involved .. You can still write a short repetitive thread with a few short new things in it.

It's not a big ask for rewards to make some effort. My two cents, let's see how the others vote :)

Perfectly reasonable! I think there's a substantial consensus among most people who responded here, but I'll give it until the end of the week.
