Between Ink and Emotion: Why Letter Writing Still Matters

in FreeCompliments4 days ago

In today's time, where technology has advanced so much, we're missing a few things. One of those things is the handwritten letters we used to post. The correspondence was a form of communication and the only way we communicated with each other. Previously, people would write a letter, stamp it, and drop it in a letterbox. It would take four to five days for it to reach the recipient, a very lengthy process. Now, the concept of instant messaging has emerged. In earlier times, such a concept didn't exist, but people were so intelligent that they appreciated it very much. These things have all but disappeared, and this box system is now facing the prospect of even closing companies.

So why was it so important in earlier times? Writing letters was a way to express your feelings. In today's world, where instant messaging is a common practice, people can't quite fathom who would wait four days for a letter. But in the past, people had so much patience that they would wait four or five days. They knew they would get a reply to a letter, and if they didn't get a reply, they would be very worried. For those whose husbands were soldiers or those who lived out of town, it was the most important way to meet or talk to family members. It was incredibly time-consuming, and nowadays, people have smartphones, which they don't have access to. But in earlier times, this was a valuable thing.

So why has the concept of letters become so obsolete? We don't write letters or post letters anymore because we have access to so much technology and so many other things that our system of waiting for a reply has been discontinued. We receive instant messages, and this can be a convenience. But the feelings and love that used to be expressed through letters cannot be achieved through instant messages these days. It was a huge deal for those who traveled abroad or were away from their families. For those who simply wanted to earn a living, it was a form of communication that we have now exchanged for phones, and these phones are a wonderful thing. But the phone, a thing that belonged to the older generation and has been around for a very long time, is ruining everyone.

In earlier times, this letter system had locked up so many people. There were countless people who relied on these things to support their households and bring food home. At today's rate, these people face significant unemployment. The letter system has been discontinued, and it's currently operating only in government offices or where there are security documents that we can't submit online. Therefore, people operate offline.

Currently, the letter box companies are being used by banks, and everyone is shutting down because nowadays, people don't need so much waiting time. If we need to send something, there are so many new ways to do it. In the past, there was only this letter system. Today, there are so many new ways to send something with apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Telegram. You can send it by train or send it by plane, which will make it much quicker. Anyone can send it. In the past, if you needed to send money or goods from one country to another, you were given a 30-day window. After 30 days, you would receive a message or a notification that your money had reached the intended recipient safely. So, we see how far the world has come.

But I truly appreciate today's technology model. Because we've made everything so easy with digital communication. It's incredibly easy for us, and it doesn't cost us anything. We've replaced everything for this. We've replaced writing with screens and replaced pens and keyboards. We've gradually introduced all this, but I believe there's a strong reason for starting anything, and no one should stop it. Writing a letter is an emotion in itself.

It's a huge accomplishment, because today, if someone writes a letter, that person is overjoyed. A letter holds a personal element; it doesn't just convey a message. A letter gives you everything, written with love or conveyed to you with love. Only the latest one can do all this because the phone messages do not contain all the love that a man or a woman can give you by writing it with their own hands because they keep waiting for the time when they can get the letter and you can reply to them on the phone.

In fact, my father used to say that in the past, there was only one letterbox in their village, where a letter collector would come and collect the letter. He would take the letter to the office, then another boy would go to the next village, and then the letter would be delivered to the person. This would take about three to four days, and then it would take two to three weeks for a reply. That's why my father said that nowadays, we used to share information about someone and then talk to them on video call.

In the past, all this was very difficult because my father used to say that my grandfather used to go out to earn money, and my father would yearn to see him. He wouldn't come home for four or five months, and we wouldn't even know if he was alive or not, because the military was the only means of getting him back. There was nothing else. There were no phones or video calls, so we didn't even know who was alive. That's why nowadays we feel very comfortable with all these systems. Where if our fathers go to work somewhere, we can find out through a video call whether our fathers are alright or not. In the old days, people had to wait for six months to see their fathers and find out.
