Wreckfest is a racing game developed by Bugbear Entertainment. The game is available for the Xbox One, PS4, and Microsoft Windows. The game can be played solo offline or online by a multi-player option.

The first thing you'll notice about Wreckfest is the amount of destruction possible during the races, not only to the cars but also the surrounding environments. Cars will crash out and fall to pieces the roads will be strewn with debris from damaged barriers tires will fly through the air and head-on collisions will result in massive pile-ups. It's not all destruction the racing is pretty well handled and the cars feel smooth and responsive for the most part.

The races are full of tense moments as you try to avoid crashing into backmarkers, smashing into wrecked vehicles, and generally keeping your car going to reach the finish line. As well as, races you have the option to partake in destruction derbies however they're not as much fun as they were in the old school classic destruction derby games. It is a nice addition though nonetheless but what would a driving game be without good courses to race around Well, Wreckfest doesn't disappoint in that department with a wide variety of tracks to choose from there are easy ovals to the more challenging street circuits and each track has several variations from standard oval and figure of orientations.

However, some of the courses are not well signposted at all. In particular, the ones that use the figure of eight or overlapping parts of the track. It makes for some annoying moments where races can be won or lost due to this random type of event. The game features a garage where you can purchase new cars customize visual elements and also buy new parts to improve performance. The variety of vehicles is pretty good from old bangers to the more luxury variety with a few odd types thrown in for good measures like sofas tractors and even a limo.

One cool aspect of the game is regardless of whether you're playing online offline or in custom events every race rewards you with experience points and currency. So, there's no time wasting here it's a really nice touch as too many games only offer you these things when you play online so you'll be able to accumulate lots of money to buy new cars very quickly.

In terms of modes, you have the extensive solo career mode a custom event mode where you can choose all sorts of settings for each race and finally, there is the online multiplayer mode. It's multiplayer that is the absolute highlight of the game you get to race with large numbers of other players and races become absolute chaos with crashes galore ongoing grudges and epic crashes that will hand you defeat from the jaws of victory.

Every race felt different as you can't predict what's going to unfold and the damage and crash gameplay make for some of the most enjoyable online races I've ever played but the AI in the solo races is pretty good too with the computer drivers happy to smash you into the barriers or take you out on the final corner as much as human players and finally on gameplay difficulty wise you've got several options casual gamers can go for the easy levels but if you really want to up the ante you can go on hard and control the gears as well.

Graphically, the game looks pretty solid in general without having the wow factor of higher budget games but the cars look good and in particular, the damage effects are excellent and really make the races and destructible elements feel believable. The menus are well optimized and easy to navigate and the game also features a nice replay mode and photo mode if you want to capture those spectacular crashes in all their glory.

The game's soundtrack, it's okay although some of the car sound effects they're also quite monotonous and annoying after a while. The in-game music you know it's great if you like metal if you're not then you might want to mute that and put on your like you know put on the radio or something. The destructible cars and environments had so much fun and variation to the races. The coarse variety is pretty good as are the vehicle options.

The game has a fun personality and a good sense of humor very evident in the ridiculous sofa races. The progression system means you never waste your time. The ability to mod your car is appreciated and in online multiplayer, this is one of the most entertaining games you can play today. While the sound work is middle of the road stuff sometimes the crashes can get a bit frustrating as pure racing skills won't always guarantee you success.

Final Thoughts

This game is an excellent racing game with an abundance of tracks cars and tournaments to partake in but the absolute star of the show is the destructible cars and environments. They add an immeasurable variable to each race which makes each race feel genuinely unique so no two play sessions will feel the same whether you're facing off against AIs or other players online. It's a thoroughly endurable experience and one I would strongly recommend the only thing the game really is missing is a split-screen mode but you know what it is today they just don't do that because they want to sell two copies rather than one. You know racing games sometimes do have a tendency to be a bit dry and very serious Wreckfest it's not one of those it's still a good racing experience but it adds some real joy and it will certainly make you laugh and put a smile on your face.
