dGoal Weekly Update #5: Feedback board and plans for alpha stage

in Hive Gaming3 years ago (edited)

ℹ️ Welcome to the weekly update of the dGoal interface for Rabona football manager. Get to know of the latest updates, be the first one to hear about what's coming next.

Welcome to the fifth weekly update of dGoal development! Last week's update saw the Fixtures Page and Team Page implement, so that you can now easily look up what formations did the opponent use in the past and also prepare for the entire month in advanced

Also, Sentry monitoring tools has been added to the app and after the first week it has already managed to catch few new issues, so they can now be fixed.

Today there are few big things that I wanted to announce, so read on!

1. Additions to the app

1.1. Feedback Board

As mentioned few times already, there's a tonne of valuable feedback from the Rabona/dGoal community: feature suggestions, bug reports and more. But the problem up until now was: this feedback was all over the place. Some of it was coming from comments added to Hive posts, other suggestions were posted in the official Rabona Discord channel and so on.

To tackle this issue was actually one of my first ideas. I did some research to find a tool that is easy to use for community, while also helpful for me in my work while developing dGoal—for example by automatically creating Github Issues for new suggestions and sycing them.

And so, I'm happy to finally present you with the dGoal Feedback board! It is set up using a neat app called Nolt.io.

dGoal's board lets you submit your own ideas/bugs and also vote on suggestions of others. This is especially helpful, because this way I'll be able to see what features are most often votes and can prioritize to work on them in the first place, rather in spending my time developing something, that nobody wants anyway.

You can sign in to the board using various login methods (no Hive though!), or you can stay anonymous. But if you decide to log in, you can receive automated updates when a suggestion you made is picked up for work and finished.

There's also Roadmap view, where you can see all tasks laid out, grouped by whether they have already been finished, are already worked on, or they are just planned or not even considered yet.

I encourage all of you to use the dGoal Feedback Board to influence the direction of dGoal's development. Suggest features, report bugs and vote on ideas of others—let's keep the community thriving!

See it at: https://dgoal.nolt.io/

1.2. Join Page

Another view was added to the app, called Join Page. This is page does what Starterpack does in Rabona. It is only displayed for new users, who have just signed up and do not have a team set up yet. On Join Page they can read more about dGoal/Rabona, set up a referrer and buy the starterpack using Hive Keychain extension.

You'll not be able to see this view if you are already a player of Rabona/dGoal though :)

I'm not suggesting who to set as referrer :)

1.3. Injured/blocked players bug fixed

There was a bug in the Prepare for Match Page, where blocked or injured players were not marked in any way, and—what's worse—such players could be assigned to play on positions as normal. This wouldn't of course work on Rabona, and such players would be automatically replaced when the match starts, but it was not a good UX nonetheless.

The bug has been tackled, so now injured or blocked players are grayed out and cannot be selected to play on a position, nor can they be selected for the bench.

1.4. Other bugs

Many other smaller bugs and issues were fixed this week, and pin-pointing them all makes no sense. Some of these were:

  • App crashing for new users, that is: users who are yet to start their first season.
  • Many parts of the app have been refactored to make the code easier to extend and maintain in the future.
  • Many small visual adjustments have been done (font weights, fixtures lists...).

There are still more to tackle of course, but I hope that Sentry & Feedback Board will allow to really catch these problems as soon as possible and have them all resolved.

2. Announcements

2.1. Pre-alpha stage closed

With today's changes the pre-alpha stage of the dGoal app is closed. This stage was highly experimental and was supposed to show the Rabona community how dGoal could work and look like, and show me whether there's any interest from the community in the project—so whether it makes sense to pursue it.

I consider this pre-alpha stage to be a success. What started as an experimental idea for me, quickly turned into a project that not only attracts the attention of the lovely Rabona community, but even gets a tonne of support directly from Rabona creators: @rondras and @oliverschmid. I could list now a thousand of various situations, where this support of guys & the community helped me a lot, but let's just keep it straight and simple: thank you all!

2.2. Alpha stage started

As I added more and more original Rabona features into the dGoal, many users started suggesting new ideas that are not present in Rabona, but would be gladly welcomed. The problem is: there's still many features of Rabona that are missing from dGoal. I have to somehow reconcile these two aspects, and that's what beta phase is for.

What changes with this alpha phase?

One one hand, I have already gained enough assurance towards dGoal to want to develop it further, and at the same time I feel like the Rabona community gained the interest in the project and many people are excited about what's to come.

On the other hand, during this alpha phase I'll prioritize adding new features much more, and implementing features that Rabona already has will not be the only goal. I know that having to switch between dGoal and Rabona interfaces to do different things is not optimal, but at the same time having some brand new features really adds to the value of the project.

I'll try to keep the ratio between adding dGoal own features and implementing Rabona features at 50/50. Special thanks to @jelly13 and his last weeks comment for clearing this out for me and some helpful insights.

So what to expect?

I have already few ideas of mine, there are few suggestions from the community for new features that are missing. This means that you can expect a lot of interesting things to start happening soon. Things like simplified strategy analysis of your opponent, suggested match formation, even an auto-play functionality...

If you have your own ideas, put them on the table: either suggest them on dgoal.nolt.io or vote on them if someone else already suggested them. You can also write to @mciszczon on Rabona's Discord if you want to talk with me directly.

I really count on your feedback and I want the users' input to shape the future od dGoal! :)

2.3. No more weekly updates

Yes, you read that right...

But don't worry! Instead of weekly updates I'll now post updates—simply. I thought about it for a while and decided that tying myself to this weekly format is doing more harm than good.

Sometimes I have more time in a week, sometimes less. The features that I work on are also different, some of them take more time than others. Having to do weekly updates forces me to have something visible ready each week. This is suboptimal.

From now on, these dGoal updates will be usually published weekly, or every two weeks. This will all depend on the things I mentioned above. So, all in all, you shouldn't see all that much of a difference :) Thanks for you understanding!

3. Test dGoal & shape its future

That's all for this update. I hope you will like the changes and new additions. At the very end of this post I would like to ask you to help me develop dGoal.

How you can do this? Simply, go visit www.dgoal.app page, log in and start using the already-existing features. If you spot any issues, bugs, problems, report them at dgoal.nolt.io. dGoal is still in its very early phase and there can be things which I have missed during my own testing.

If you also have any ideas for new features and enhancements, submit your suggestions to dgoal.nolt.io or vote for others submissions to show that you'd also like to see them implemented.

As always, thanks for your attention and see you next time!

Thanks as always :)

The feedback board is a great idea and one that let's users vote for what they think should get faster done. You are on the right track and the UX is taking shape quite well along with features being released constantly. Keep on going!!!

Thanks a lot!

@uwelang hoffe das ok, dass ich dich hier so frage. Du bist ja Profi was Hive anbelangt. Will ja hier gut vorankommen ;)
