Bayonetta (Nintendo Switch) – It's Certainly More Bayonetta

So to start I don't entirely know how to describe the story, because by the end of the game I'm not sure about a lot of what was going on. I can't describe to you why the Bayonetta of this universe among all the others is referred to as Arch-Eve Origin, I'm not entirely sure how the multiple reality thing works, and I could go on about all the things I walked away not understanding. Bayonetta is trying to stop Singularity from destroying all of the universes.

The plots of Bayonetta have never really been what carried the game's narrative, what does that is a very likable cast of characters. Bayonetta is as fun and sassy as ever, Luka just as much of a lovable doof as always, and then there is the eternally smooth and cool Rodin. You care about what happens not because you are invested in the plot, but in the characters. It's possible I just missed something and the plot elements are more sensible than I give the game credit for, but so long as you like the characters, the story is going to be fun to follow regardless. That said, I hate Viola. A lot. Here is my last post about her just so I don't bog this review down with ranting about her all over again.

The gameplay is a tweaked version of the previous two games. It's a very stylized combat that requires fast reflexes and combos. You have to find different ways to deal with various enemies, but it is to the game's benefit it's not too long, because you don't have enough enemy variety to carry the mechanics for a lot longer before things start getting repetitive. I do like the game breaks it up with the some-stealth Sidescroller levels you play as Jeanne, as well as the mini-games that makeup what are essentially giant Kaiju fights. I'm not a big fan of the Kaiju fights though, as you are just playing Rock Paper Scissors. I never really liked that being the central mechanic of anything, but your mileage on that will vary. Point is, the game does just enough to shake up the gameplay for its runtime.

And past that... it's Bayonetta. It is exactly what you would want and expect out of the game. It makes enough tweaks to feel fresh, you get some really fun moments with characters you like, and plenty of bits of Bayonetta herself being cheeky, you are going to go into this game getting exactly what you would have wanted. Yeah, I hated Viola and it does drag my enjoyment of the game down a fair bit, but it's nowhere near enough to make this a bad game. If you were a fan of all of the previous games, it's definitely worth the play.

You realize that the game is good when you look more at the characters than the story itself haha, I've always heard of the Bayonetta saga but never played one, but after those screenshots made me want to play wink wink.
