Curse of the Dead Gods is an isometric Roguelike that stands out at first glance and above all is presented as a new challenge within the genre, it is a game that presents an amazing visual section, enemies that invite you to keep fighting and advancing. Despite being a genre that rarely reinvents itself, Curse of the Dead Gods has given good touches to it to take it into consideration and thus spend hours and hours playing, but is it all as good as it seems? or is it just another game of the bunch? I invite you to read my little analysis.

STORY

And the story? certainly the Roguelike genre always focuses on action, however, in recent years we had seen an awakening in how this type of games were incorporating stories that would give more meaning to just having to go through dungeons, in this case Curse of the Dead Gods disappoints, its story is not something that will surprise us or that we will just want to explore a little more. It seems that we are in a temple just to fight, there is no more context than that and then that leaves our character without motivations which leads us to wonder about the story that is presented to us. I think this would have been a hook to the player's liver if the story was enhanced.

Gameplay

freakeao separador nuevo 1.png

Curse of the Dead Gods dares to take a new step in the gameplay of Roguelike, taking the darkness of the dungeons and making it part of the interaction, for example, if an enemy attacks us from the darkness, he can surely cause you a lot of damage, as well as at certain times playing in the dark allows you to advance through multiple areas or even take your opponents by surprise. Another point that we must take into consideration is that our hero must carry a torch if or if a torch to make a game of light and shadow type, it is necessary to illuminate the places through which you pass, it is an equivalent to the flashlight in Silent Hill, to detail you must illuminate and if you want to avoid the bad guys obviously there must be clarity. The combat system is the already known of the genre you can attack and run, here these events are accompanied with a spectacular graphics, animations that make the moment a real delight. Something that is appreciated is that there are a variety of bosses, traps and curses that we will suffer which brings dynamism to everything we are living, it misses that story that can be combined with the technical section.

Technical Section

freakeao separador nuevo 1.png

Curse of the Dead Gods, is a game that presents us with an amazing graphic section well taken care of, this especially when we are facing an opponent, the effects of the battles, colors are highlighted that make our fights a visual spectacle, on the other hand, the part that may not like the average player is the game of lights and shadows; in general the darkness envelops everything and often do not know what important elements we are overlooking. I understand that this was done in order to incorporate darkness as an important element, but it becomes more of an annoyance than something you can enjoy. As for the environmental sounds are always present, making each step, blow feels realistically, something that does not stand out is certainly the soundtrack, which you can forget a few seconds to culminate the game, accompanies yes, it is boring no; but to be an action game is necessary to incorporate elements that encourage you. Its exceptional graphics and sound were halfway there.

Highlights

  1. The game mechanics are well polished
  2. New game mechanics are added to the genre.
  3. A superb visual section, at a glance shows its potential.

The Worst

  1. The perpetual darkness that sometimes prevents you from seeing some important elements of the game.
  2. The story does not become relevant and is diluted.

Conclusion

Curse of the Dead Gods It does not disappoint, it is a Roguelike that has innovative elements within its gameplay, and above all has managed to stand out from the genre in its artistic section that is a luxury, however when we analyze further all its elements do not complement each other at all, sometimes being repetitive to exhaustion, what should be its forte the game of lights and shadows ends up being its worst defect a darkness that at times prevents you from seeing clearly the scenarios and know if there are more opponents. Despite wanting to go out in the genre even lacked many elements to overcome Hades to cite an example. Entertaining game, enjoyable.

HISTORIA

freakeao separador nuevo 1.png

JUGABILIDAD

freakeao separador nuevo 1.png

APARTADO TECNICO

freakeao separador nuevo 1.png

Juego entretenido, disfrutable.

This game is very much on my list of games to play. Just a shame that list is so long. I'm looking forward to it. The darkness element you put under "worst" is something that really intrigues me. It feels like it will add extra danger to it all. Looking forward to trying it and great that you enjoy it!

If it adds something different to the genre by the fact of having to take into consideration the shadow play factor, the point for me is that it reaches a point where it becomes repetitive. It's a great game despite that element but that's just an opinion. Maybe you will find some other points for or against.

Hive Power Up Day - April 1st 2021 - Hive Power Delegation

I play roguelikes almost exclusively and I was trying for a while to cover most of them as they came out, I haven't tried this one out yet though, but I saw it the other day and it looks interesting. How does it stack up against BoI and Hades? Are there enough unlockable/diversity of level and bosses to keep you playing for like 50/100 hours? One of the problems with Hades (which is a masterpiece imo) is that the levels/bosses feel extremely repetitive even with modifiers. A game like BoI you can literally just play forever and probably never get an identical run lol. I'm trying to decide if I want to buy the new Repentance DLC for BoI because last time I bought a DLC it ate like 250 hours of my life.

Looks cool, I don't know if I would enjoy the darkness mechanic much though. Seems like it could get annoying having to deal with the torch all the time.
