Metin 2 - (G)old memories of the MMORPG games' beginnings? [Let's Play Games #85]

in Hive Gaming β€’ 2 years ago (edited)

Hello gamers! I hope everyone had a great weekend, full of perfect weather, new memories created and shared smiles! πŸ˜ƒ

Today's game review is going to be a little bit more emotional because it represents one of my first games played more seriously other than spending just a few minutes into a game and then moving on to try a different one. It's one of those games that will always have a special spot in my heart even though I don't play it anymore but I'm sure that many of you will understand what I'm saying.

On the same line, I'd like to ask you: What's the most played game by you? or What's the first game that made you realize how much you love gaming?

Source

Unfortunately, back in 2007 when I started playing Metin 2 this was just a game that you could download for free from the website without having the option to take in-game screenshots, so I'll have to use some of the images found on the internet to make you understand better what's the game about if you didn't hear about it by now.

I guess that everyone is aware of what MMORPG means but to make this a lot more clear, MMORPG stands for massively multiplayer online role-playing games which is a mix between role-playing games (RPGs) and multiplayer online gaming worlds.

Source

The game starts with the need of creating an account and then set up your character.
You can pick one out of five different classes: Sura, Shaman, Warrior, Ninja, and Lycan, where each of them has different powers.

For example, a Warrior is known as being the most powerful class but making a team with a Shaman that has healing properties will make the perfect match.

However, when I was playing this game there were only 4 classes so I can't talk too much about Lycan which was added a lot later because I don't know exactly what its properties are but here is a little summary for all the other classes in case my review makes you curious to try out the game:

  • Warrior: great strength against fighting monsters
  • Sura: good strength but which still needs support from another class to resist in the battles
  • Shaman: healing properties that increase other players' stats
  • Ninja: very fast and good melee fighter

Source

As soon as you created your character, the next step is to pick the region where you want to have your base because the whole action takes place in an ancient world composed of three different kingdoms. From what I remember you won't be able to travel from one kingdom to another but don't worry because there are still plenty of players these days so you won't be taken away from meeting new gamers and even play together because this is actually the main game where I created many friendships in my life.

As soon as you are done with this step, you will begin your journey as a rookie which is just level 1 and has the minimum accessories like a sword and some potions for mana and health.

Source

To level up and get a better gear you have to either do quests which are quite a lot and which will give you XP, or to fight all kinds of creatures from simple animals that have a pretty low level, to mystic beings that will become a challenge even for the more experienced players.

If you have a friend who has a bigger level than you, then you can always make a party with him and just let him have some fun while the XP will be split for the whole party and get you a higher level quick because the bigger lvl a creature has, the more XP it will give.

Source

I won't get too deep into technical details of the game such as what are the quests and so on, because I don't think it would make any sense. What I would like to share instead is that the game is pretty complex from being able to go fishing to even having a wedding or dancing at parties, getting a new haircut and also leaving the scary armour on side to get yourself some nice and 'normal' clothes.

I am aware that these details don't mean too much in 2022 when almost every game has customizable items and characters but back in 2004 when Metin 2 was released, it was a big step for the gaming industry and not many people knew how to take advantage of it.

Also, even though I didn't play Metin 2 from the first moment it was released, as soon as I got into it, I fell in love quickly with the MMORPGs and I did spend a lot of thousands of hours in this game, hence why it means so much for me even today.

I know that there were a lot of other MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, Cabal, Lineage 2 and Rohan: Blood Feud, where, of course, I tried all of them out, but somehow having Metin 2 as my first experience in this genre of games it just made me get back to it over and over again no matter how many other MMORPGs with better graphics and effects I was discovering.

Source

Anyway, with every level you make, you will get all kinds of drops but also skill points that will make your strength increase.

At level 25 you will become eligible for getting a horse that will help you move faster from one place to another but also unlock you to become a member of a guild that represents the proper beginnings of the game because once you are in a guild you will participate in different battles or even find faster friends to play together with.

And I'm sure that many of you know how important is to have someone to play with, in the virtual world. πŸ™‚

Conclusions πŸ€”

What I liked about this Korean game is that you can play it both alone or with your friends, either setting up your character by yourself or figuring out what would make it the best team because there are quite a few great combinations as I explained before.

Metin 2 represents one of the games where no matter how much you advance in the game, you will always find a lot of things to do because we are talking about an open world one that offers plenty of opportunities on how to spend your in-game time.

The game might look a little bit outdated in 2022 when we can talk about a lot of other games from the same category that have more abilities and better graphics, but I'm sure it still stirs interest for those who have played it in the past. Also, once you try it out, you will keep playing it for a while for sure.

Did you play it? 😁

I know that the community of gamers from here comes with players of all ages so I'd like to hear from you, if you either played it or if you are interested in trying it out in 2022 because just as I said, for me it represents a really important game.

Oh, and the game is still free to play if you wondered. In plus, you can download it directly from Steam without having to go through a lot of steps as it was happening when I first played it.

NOTE:

  • all the pictures attached are in-game screenshots taken by me (unless if other stated). πŸ“Έ

Thanks! Did you play the game?

This game you mention I have never had the opportunity to play it, but the first game I played and that made me see how much I like video games was the prince of persia t2t, an epic and legendary game for me.

Oh, so many gold memories with that one too! I completed Prince of Persia on a friend's PSP before even having a computer. I forgot about the gaming times before having a pc haha.

Thanks for the great memories! Hope you have a nice day!

The first MMO I experienced was WoW. I played it first at a friends house when I was around 10 but never got into it until I was around 12 because I couldn't remember the name of it. I jumped in during Wraith a bit before Cata was announced.

There's something about the grinding aspect of MMOs that I love!

I had a neighbor and also good friend of mine who was playing WoW a lot so I totally understand you. MMORPGs are pretty amazing. Not so many toxic gamers as you find in competitive games...

I find WoW to be a mixed bag. I know the SWTOR community is usually mint but I kinda dropped off that game as it doesn't really feel like an MMO anymore. Although I do need to hop back on it to play Legacy of the Sith.

Yeah I know. I got the same feeling when I tried Metin 2 last year. Maybe it's the thing that the developers didn't bring too many adjustments to the games so they feel more like what people would play in 2022. Or maybe it's because there are a lot nicer MMORPGs released lately. Who knows? πŸ€”

What's the most played game by you? or What's the first game that made you realize how much you love gaming?

Well the first time I played on Atari lol, but when I played my first sand box, that got me addicted, if I remember correctly it was Vice City.

I don't know this game, but it reminds me of Dinasty Warrior and also Final Fantasy VIII for its way of playing, it seems like a combination of both.

Well, it's a MMORPG just like these mentioned by you so all these games are pretty similar to each other having the same main actions πŸ™‚

Good memories with Vice City! The GTA is definitely one of the best serious out there which many of our grew up with. Can't wait to see a new game being released of the series!

Yeah the MMORPGs at that time all had a very similar way of playing them.

I'm also looking forward to more of this Rock Star saga but until the profits drop with GTAV online, it won't come out.

Yeah, that's pretty understandable as the same thing happens in CSGO with all the skins that bring lots of money to Valve.

Yeah, it's never be free, all it's pay to win

Absolutely!
