Microsoft buys Activision-Blizzard in $70 billion USD deal.

In the biggest gaming acquisition in history by FAR, Phil Spencer has announced that Activision-Blizzard are now under the Xbox umbrella much like Bethesda, and some of the hugest properties in the world of gaming are now owned by Microsoft, such as the hugely popular 20 year old WoW MMO and the insanely huge Call of Duty series, and let's not forget the cash cow that's Candy Crush (and all the other great franchises of Blizzard's golden era).

This comes right after Phil Spencer says they'll do what it takes whatever competition Sony throws together to Gamepass, and damn, this is huge.
Xbox players will be getting so many great games on Gamepass and now Microsoft has a huge catalog of games it can choose to make exclusive.

The true evaluation was of $68.7 billion, that's absolutely colossal and dwarves the $8 billion or so that Microsoft previously paid for Bethesda.
I'm no fanboy and I really hope those who choose Sony systems as their gaming platforms don't get too affected by this, but the implications will be huge regardless and I'd say it's a safe assumption that at least one or two franchises will become exclusive, such has happened to The Elder's Scrolls (at least with VI).

Only time will tell how huge this truly is, but I legitimately thought the news were fake.

As I couldn't even get a glimpse of their intent to buy for I was sleeping. This was so fast and so huge, it's probably one of the highlights of this year already in gaming.

I legitimately missed the news, this was at 8am EST and updated 12 minutes ago, FAST.

Time will tell what happens now but as a paying customer of Gamepass Ultimate, it'd be incredible to get some sweet Activision-Blizzard games.

Talking about the entire controversy around Activision is a whole other can of worms, and I really hope Microsoft is able to fix this company once and for all and that Bobby Kotick gets the jail time he deserves.
May Activision be as great as it was during their Atari days.

Sort:

This came outta nowhere to me. I don't really care about any of their game to be bothered by the exclusivity to Xbox and PC (I'm a PC gamer anyways). It's a shame all the big companies are just swallowing each other. Let's hope it doesn't affect quality.

I saw this as a huge possibility and this is one where I don't really care about the fact a company swallowed another.

Activision needed an urgent shake-up, the horror stories coming from there couldn't be ignored anymore and I think no one is more up to task to revitalize and undo Activision's wrongs than Xbox under Spencer.

Of course the man's not perfect, but even Bethesda is somehow turning into a better company, I really hope their huge franchises remain multiplat but I know for sure Activision will have brighter days ahead now.

I'm also a PC gamer, but stuff like this also affects us due to Gamepass and such. I also still think of my friends who are stuck on console because of choice or the GPU shortages, it's exciting but also a little frightening.

Let's hope for the best!

Honestly, I feel as though this was a risky purchase on Microsoft's behalf, considering the backlash against Acti-Blizzard in recent years. I have absolutely no faith in Acti-Blizzard these days, but maybe Microsoft owning them will stop them setting themselves on fire.

That's exactly my hope here. Activision-Blizzard's problems were management and a toxic work environment. Both problems walked hand in hand and it led to a terrible terrible situation. If you take a look at Xbox's or Phil Spencer's tweets, they're focusing a lot on diversity and inclusivity - while it's hard to take the words of any corpo, it's still great to see that they're putting this out so clearly, even if it is a financial move, there's still hope.
If Microsoft can end the BS happening inside Acti-Blizzard, then they'll enjoy a huge outpouring of support and also those sweet sweet guaranteed revenue streams from Call of Duty, WoW, Overwatch and specially the mobile games division (with games such as Candy Crush, which sure, casual, but the money it makes is astronomical).

So they learned from their mistakes
because with the xbox one they had fewer companies on they own,
so it failed, but this time they change a lot! 🤔

To be honest, the Xbox One was far from a failure.
It sure did flop hard at launch because the previous head of Xbox was an absolute... Idiot.

But the division got turned around and the Xbox One became a great value system, one that I owned for a good amount of time and for very little money had a great deal of fun.

Playstation had the better exclusives, but Xbox was good for your average Joe that didn't care about that.

Activision has always been multiplatform and I'm pretty against exclusivity, it's great that Microsoft games come out on PC also but I think these barriers are superficial and only serve to give fake value to systems.

The Nintendo Switch for example is a great buy because of the niche it fills, of portability, the PS5 is great because of the UX and how powerful it is, the Series X is great for being generally cheaper than the 5 and being a good PC companion and the Series S is great for budget gamers.

It's sad to rely on exclusivity deals, so I really hope Microsoft does the right thing with Activision.

Yes that's right,
Each console has its own strength
but in my opinion the xbox is really moving forward now
and maybe it could be a game changer out there!

I think Blizard did good selling their company. They were fucked anyway, they even been banned from the game awards. But shit thats crazy Microsoft slowly eating every company.
