Hello everyone! Here I come again with a collaboration post with @stk-g who was the person I played this game with a few days ago, Distraint is a game that we already played together (using the same method of “you play it for a little bit then we change to me playing and then you play it again and then-”… y’all get the point I guess) and this was back in 2016… I think(?) the game came out in 2015 so it was around those years, but of course we almost didn’t remember much of the game apart from a couple of things so it was a fun idea to play it again and regain the memories that we had with it.
The only difference this time was that we played the Deluxe version (something that we didn’t know existed) which (from the looks of it) is a version with a more “expressive” touch than the original release (this is more like a bet than a fact, to be honest we hardly recognized any differences, there are more detailed expressions from the characters like Price’s, but nothing much more than that, I’ve got to remind you that we haven’t played this in years so we don’t remember every detail of it so lots of things probably went over our heads haha). Anyway, I’ll move on to tell you how we carried on with the game, to read the first part of this awesome collab please go here and please note that this post will be filled with major spoilers so read it at your own risk.
The last thing that happened in the game was that Price just had a nightmare, or that’s what he thinks of it (though he is getting more suspicious about this dreams since his conscience is eating him up at this point), he wakes up and thinks of going to visit Mrs. Goodwin to “ease” his mind, then he’s ready to drink his adored cup of coffee that he always needs after waking up (a mood) but is surprised by a call so he goes to answer his telephone, and there it is, that same very scenario of his dreams happens, he makes an assumption to the person at the other end of the call and he turns to be correct, Mrs. Goodwin had a stroke and she would like to see him as she doesn’t have anyone else, so Price agrees to go see her and so the call ends.
Then while thinking that his actions are coming back to bite his neck he then encounters his dead parents once again, but while they keep telling him about how his actions have consequences and that his work would only bring misery to others, Price just can’t stop feeling guilty, the thing is he is still making up excuses and throwing his feelings under a rug because is what will make him “success”, his parents gone now and having drank his coffee he then starts to prepare to visit Mrs. Goodwin.
Now we are at the nursing home, and the ambiance here is horrible, is like visiting hell and contrary to what Price thought at first, it will impossible for him to ease his mind after visiting Mrs. Goodwin. Then here we go on the typical little adventure, looking where Mrs. Goodwin is but with the usual extra steps in video games, we go to the first floor and see how the chef is mad at how they don’t have any good food (specially meat) to provide for the residents, then we find this old dude at the basement complaining how there’s not electricity for him to continue with his work, somewhere else a locked door is bleeding and we can’t enter there without the nurse’s help, we repair the electricity and find out what the old guy was doing, chopping up some “oldster” that died some days ago and so Price takes that person’s meat and gives it to the chef who is now very happy that he can cook some good ol’ meat (yummy… ew), then Price takes some food to “Mrs. Goodwin” but ends up in another resident’s room, blah, blah, blah, this is not a guide for the game (or is it?… ok no, it’s totally not one).
After going up and down, back and forth and yadda yadda, then we also repair the old TV in the lobby and this gets a man out of the way to what is the door of Mrs. Goodwin’s room but Price wants to give her some flowers (that for some reason he didn’t get in his way to the nursing home ahem). He then gets the nurse to open the gates to the locked door and there we find a skeleton with a flower on its mouth (after what that dude did to the body of that deceased person, this is not that weird honestly) and finally Price takes the flower and goes to Mrs. Goodwin feeling guilty and ashamed.
His conversation with her was brief, he apologized and even told her to go live with him, that he will take care of her, but Mrs. Goodwin knew that she didn’t have much time left and while she was happy that Price visited her, she assured him that at the very least, she could see her husband again soon.
Price is consumed by guilt and doubt, but even so he could not stop, he needed to end his work, and so he went on to the last name on his list, Mr. Jones.
Ok, from here on I think this is the most weird part of the game, not to say the trickiest of the game since there’s this dynamic of having to do certain things in a certain amount of time + the usual puzzles that obviously will appear here and there, so to not give away soooo much about the game I’ll just point to the most important(?) parts of this section, from some point on here stk-u also had to leave so I pretty much finished the game alone after that (still, thanks to him for helping me out and clearing my confusion with the doors and all lol).
Looking for the so called Mr. Jones was tricky, he lived in a building filled with apartments but most of them were blocked, so Price had to go “into the walls” to find where he was, and part of the adventure in this path was finding a drug lab inside some of the walls which helped Price to enter the blocked doors and eventually finding Mr. Jones, and this one was “mostly” chill about the situation he was only upset that he couldn’t convince the band from the other door to play in his last party in the apartment and obviously only agreed to not take a tantrum against the place if Price convinced them, so OF COURSE, Price had to do it (like I get it, no one wants to do that paperwork anyway hh).
Price goes to them, they say they refused the offer ‘cause the guy was probably not going to pay for it like he said he would and so Price (making a couple of calls wink wink) gets them a deal with the condition that they have to play blues, and so everything goes smoothly.
Price is dreaming again but without having finished his soul-crashing dream with Mrs. Goodwin a loud noise wakes him up. He gets up and leaves his room, trying to follow the noise thru his very dark apartment, what he finds is nothing else than his [d e a d] parents making breakfast for him, or more literally, his parents chopping down the elephant in his room… they are making him eat his guilt, and Price don’t want this, he definitely doesn’t want this and scream at his parents to stop, and so they disappear, Price tries to calm down and starts making coffee, then he takes the newspaper and sit down to read it, but in the pages of the obituaries and among all those names one strikes Price’s heart without any mercy… “Nancy P. Goodwin”. This hurt him so much that he decided to quit his job, but first things first, he needs to pay a visit to Mrs. Goodwin’s grave.
Having already said goodbye to Mrs. Goodwin, Price last mission is to go up to his bosses and quit, the final act to go on with his life to try to have peace for once and for all, it would be even easier than to confront Mrs. Goodwin’s death but it was all eating Price’s brain from the inside, while in the office he gets to see each of his bosses true colors, how despicable and cruel they were with people, they were all more reasons for him to quit and yet… what he had waiting at the other side of his bosses’ door was something he didn’t see coming… Price was promoted and he had gained a partnership, and even though that he still wanted to shout aloud that he was going to resignation, and the sight of that sign that read “McDade, Moore, Bruton & Price” make the path that once was guided and lighted on by Mrs. Goodwin fall back into darkness consumed by Price’s greed.
Then we start to see what is really going on, Price’s is telling this story, like actually telling his story to a young guy about his life, and Price is older now living in a dirty place, nothing like his apartment from before, he then starts telling this guy how he keep working for a few years with his partnership and all, but at some point his mind broke and got fired for it and fell into debt losing everything he once had. And is here where we learn that the young guy is there to take over his house, telling him he has to move by the end of the month, basically doing what Price did at some point, he reassures Price that he will give his career a second thought and with his story in mind he leaves. Price really hopes that the guy listens to him but never mind that, this is it, Price’s last mission, is to end it all, and is for real this time, he takes the shotgun, he writes a note: “What comes around goes around. Fuck it.”, and goes to sit down in a chair and ends his life.
And that’s it!, what comes around REALLY goes around and the story of this games follow that to its heart and its very core, I don’t have much to say about it, I love this game and it’s message, and something I really enjoyed about it is how it can deliver to the player that feeling of how one can feel while hearing an story unravel and understand it without the need of every little detail. I’m just glad I came around it again because its fucking worth it. ¡Hola a todos! Aquí vengo de nuevo con un post en colaboración con @stk-g que fue la persona con la que jugué a este juego hace unos días, Distraint es un juego al que ya jugamos juntos (usando el mismo método de "tú lo juegas un ratito y luego cambiamos a que yo juegue y luego tú lo vuelves a jugar y entonces-"... ya me entienden) y esto fue allá por 2016... creo(?) el juego salió en 2015 así que fue por esos años, pero claro, casi no recordábamos mucho del juego aparte de un par de cosas así que fue una idea divertida volver a jugarlo y recuperar los recuerdos que teníamos con él.
La única diferencia esta vez fue que jugamos la versión Deluxe (algo que no sabíamos que existía) que (por lo que parece) es una versión con un toque más "expresivo" que la versión original (esto es más una suposición que un hecho, para ser sincera apenas reconocimos diferencias, hay expresiones más detalladas de los personajes como las de Price, pero nada más que eso, tengo que recordarles que hace años que no jugamos a esto por lo que no recordamos cada detalle del mismo así que muchas cosas probablemente se nos pasaron por alto haha). En fin, paso a contarles cómo seguimos el juego, para leer la primera parte de esta gran colaboración por favor vayan aquí y tengan en cuenta que este post estará lleno de spoilers importantes así que léanlo bajo su propio riesgo.
Lo último que sucedió en el juego fue que Price acaba de tener una pesadilla, o eso es lo que él piensa de esta (aunque cada vez sospecha más de estos sueños ya que su conciencia lo está carcomiendo a estas alturas), se despierta y piensa en ir a visitar a la señora Goodwin para "aliviar" su mente, entonces se dispone a tomar su adorada taza de café que siempre necesita después de despertar (me siento identificada) pero es sorprendido por una llamada así que va a contestar su teléfono, y ahí está, ese mismo escenario de sus sueños sucede, hace una suposición a la persona al otro lado de la llamada y resulta estar en lo cierto, la señora Goodwin tuvo un ataque y le gustaría verlo ya que no tiene a nadie más, así que Price acepta ir a verla y así termina la llamada.
Entonces, mientras piensa que sus acciones están volviendo para morderle el cuello, se encuentra de nuevo con sus padres muertos, pero mientras ellos siguen diciéndole que sus acciones tienen consecuencias y que su trabajo sólo traerá miseria a los demás, Price no puede dejar de sentirse culpable, la cosa es que sigue inventando excusas y tirando sus sentimientos bajo la alfombra porque es lo que le hará "triunfar", sus padres ya se han ido y después de haberse bebido su café empieza a prepararse para visitar a la señora Goodwin.
Ahora estamos en la residencia de ancianos, y el ambiente aquí es horrible, es como visitar el infierno y al contrario de lo que Price pensaba al principio, le será imposible tranquilizarse después de visitar a la señora Goodwin. Y es aquí cuendo entramos en la típica pequeña aventura, buscando donde está la señora Goodwin pero con los pasos extras habituales en los videojuegos, vamos al primer piso y vemos como el chef está enfadado porque no tienen buena comida (especialmente carne) para proveer a los residentes, luego encontramos a un viejo en el sótano quejándose de que no hay electricidad para seguir con su trabajo, en otro lugar una puerta cerrada esta sangrando y no podemos entrar ahí sin la ayuda de la enfermera, reparamos la electricidad y descubrimos lo que el viejo estaba haciendo, haciendo trozos algún "viejo" que murió hace algunos días y entonces Price toma la carne de esa persona y se la da al chef que ahora esta muy feliz de poder cocinar algo de buena carne (yummy... ew), luego Price le lleva algo de comida a la "Señora Goodwin" pero acaba en la habitación de otro residente, bla, bla, bla, esto no es una guía para el juego (¿o sí?... ok no, no lo es en absoluto).
Después de subir y bajar, ir y venir y bla bla bla, también reparamos el viejo televisor del vestíbulo y esto hace que un hombre se aparte de lo que es la puerta de la habitación de la señora Goodwin pero Price quiere darle unas flores (que por alguna razón no consiguió en su camino al asilo ahem). Entonces consigue que la enfermera abra las rejas de la puerta cerrada y allí nos encontramos con un esqueleto con una flor en la boca (después de lo que ese tipo le hizo al cuerpo de esa persona fallecida, esto no es tan raro sinceramente) y finalmente Price toma la flor y se dirige a la señora Goodwin sintiéndose culpable y avergonzado.
Su conversación con ella fue breve, se disculpó e incluso le dijo que se fuera a vivir con él, que cuidaría de ella, pero la señora Goodwin sabía que no le quedaba mucho tiempo y aunque se alegró de que Price la visitara, le aseguró que al menos, podría volver a ver a su marido pronto.
Price se ve consumido por la culpa y la duda, pero aun así no podía detenerse, necesitaba terminar su trabajo, por lo que siguió con el último nombre de su lista, el Sr. Jones.
Ok, a partir de aquí creo que esta es la parte más extraña del juego, por no decir la más complicada de este ya que existe esta dinámica de tener que hacer ciertas cosas en un tiempo determinado + los habituales puzzles que obviamente aparecerán aquí y allá, así que para no desvelar taaaaanto sobre el juego me limitaré a señalar las partes más importantes(?) de esta sección, a partir de algún punto aquí stk-u también tuvo que irse así que prácticamente terminé el juego sola después de eso (aún así, gracias a él por ayudarme y aclarar mi confusión con las puertas y todo lol).
Buscar al tan llamado Sr. Jones era complicado, vivía en un edificio lleno de apartamentos pero la mayoría de ellos estaban bloqueados, así que Price tenía que ir "entre las paredes" para encontrar dónde estaba, y parte de la aventura en este camino era encontrar un laboratorio de drogas dentro de algunas de las paredes que ayudaban a Price a entrar en las puertas bloqueadas y finalmente encontrar al Sr. Jones, y este estaba "mayormente" tranquilo con la situación solo estaba molesto por no poder convencer a la banda de la otra puerta de tocar en su última fiesta en el apartamento y obviamente solo accedió a no hacer un berrinche contra el lugar si Price los convencía, así que POR SUPUESTO, Price tuvo que hacerlo (aun así lo entiendo, nadie quiere hacer ese tipo de papeleo de todos modos hh).
Price va a verlos, ellos dicen que rechazaron la oferta porque probablemente el tipo no iba a pagar como dijo que lo haría y entonces Price (haciendo un par de llamadas guiño guiño) les consigue un trato con la condición de que tienen que tocar blues, y así todo va viento en popa.
Price vuelve a soñar pero sin haber terminado su sueño que le rompe el alma con la señora Goodwin un fuerte ruido le despierta. Se levanta y sale de su habitación, tratando de seguir el ruido a través de su apartamento que esta muy oscuro, lo que encuentra no es otra cosa que sus [f a l l e c i d o s] padres haciéndole el desayuno, o más literalmente, sus padres cortando el elefante en su habitación... le están haciendo comer su culpa, y Price no quiere esto, definitivamente no quiere esto y les grita a sus padres que se detengan, y así desaparecen, Price trata de calmarse y se pone a preparar café, luego toma el periódico y se sienta a leerlo, pero en las páginas de los obituarios y entre todos esos nombres uno golpea el corazón de Price sin piedad... "Nancy P. Goodwin". Esto le duele tanto que decide dejar su trabajo, pero lo primero es hacer una visita a la tumba de la señora Goodwin.
Habiéndose despedido ya de Mrs. Goodwin, la última misión de Price es acercarse a sus jefes y renunciar, el acto final para seguir con su vida y tratar de tener paz de una vez por todas, sería incluso más fácil que enfrentar la muerte de Mrs. Goodwin pero todo eso le estaba comiendo el cerebro a Price por dentro, mientras esta en la oficina llega a ver cada uno de los verdaderos colores de sus jefes, lo despreciables y crueles que eran con la gente, todo esto eran más razones para que renunciara y sin embargo... lo que le esperaba al otro lado de la puerta de sus jefes era algo que no vio venir.... Price había sido ascendido y se había hecho socio, y a pesar de eso todavía quería gritar en voz alta que iba a renunciar, pero la visión de ese cartel que decía "McDade, Moore, Bruton & Price" hacen que el camino que una vez fue guiado e iluminado por la señora Goodwin vuelve a caer en la oscuridad consumida por la codicia de Price.
Entonces empezamos a ver lo que realmente está sucediendo, Price está contando esta historia, literalmente contando su historia a un joven, y Price es mayor ahora viviendo en un lugar sucio, nada como su apartamento de antes, entonces comienza a decirle a este muchacho cómo siguió trabajando durante unos años con su lugar como socio y todo, pero en algún momento su mente se rompió y fue despedido por ello y cayó en la deuda perdiendo todo lo que una vez tuvo. Y es aquí donde nos enteramos de que el joven está allí para hacerse cargo de su casa, diciéndole que tiene que mudarse a fin de mes, básicamente haciendo lo que Price hizo en algún momento, le asegura a Price que pensara más sobre su carrera y con su historia en mente se va. Price realmente espera que el muchacho lo escuche pero no importa eso, esto es todo, la última misión de Price, es terminar con todo, y es de verdad esta vez, toma la escopeta, escribe una nota: "Lo que das se te devuelve. A la mierda", y va a sentarse en una silla y acaba con su vida.
Y eso es todo, lo que das Realmente se te devuelve y la historia de este juego sigue esto desde su corazón y su núcleo, no tengo mucho que decir al respecto, me encanta este juego y su mensaje, y algo que realmente disfruté de él es cómo se puede entregar al jugador esa sensación de cómo uno puede sentirse al escuchar una historia desenvolviendose y entenderla sin la necesidad de cada pequeño detalle. Me alegro de haberme acercado de nuevo a él porque merece bastante la pena. Gracias de nuevo a @stk-u por jugarlo de nuevo conmigo, es triste que no hayamos podido terminarlo juntos pero al menos ya lo hicimos una vez así que está bien haha, muchas gracias por leer, espero que todos tengan un buen día/noche, Aufwiedersehen.
