Why does the Switch get so many tempting re-releases?

XCOM 2, BioShock Infinite. These are two of my favourite things. These two things recently released onto the Switch, and I feel compelled to buy them again. I know I shouldn't - I've got the PC versions of both these titles, and they'll run much faster, much cleaner, and with better graphics and controls on the PC.

Yet, with these titles, much like the recent re-release of Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Knights, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale on the Switch, I feel compelled to purchase these games again, because the portability and convenience of having these Switch titles available to me no matter where I am in the world is an appealing prospect.

A stupid, unjustified one, at that - when, with a little effort, and an Internet connection, you can stream a game that's installed on your home computer anywhere - provided you've got a reliable data connection at both ends, and a controller that works with an Android powered device.

That certainly isn't as convenient though. I would love for more video game publishers to implement a different approach to releasing games - and something that, if the price was right, some people would be willing to pay for.

Release a game once, and then allow it to be played on any platform. Sure, each publisher might have to have an "app store" on each platform that you sign into with your "publisher id", but it would work. With so many publishers releasing their own front-ends for PC releases of the game, this would at least ensure the experience was consistent for everyone.

Perhaps you could pay more for a "play it on any platform" licence. Having said that, I always prefer to have physical copies of games, because once the network is down, good luck reconnecting to verify your identity, or redownload an ancient game from a server that's been shut down.

I think I'm going to wait until I get XCOM 2 and BioShock Collection in some sort of physical (and discounted) edition on the Switch, because I've always been in love with both these games. I would've liked to have seen Enemy Within released on the Switch, but a man can dream...

Sort:

Path of Exile's latest League's just been announced. Looks good. Looks real good.

I can't keep up :)

Don't forget about the unbelievable ports of Doom (2016) and The Witcher 3 on Switch. It boggles my mind how they could cram such huge games on those cartridges. The novelty of playing these on a portable system really makes me consider buying them again in their glorious low resolution.
Also, I like the idea of a "play anywhere" system of buying games, but it scares me as the control the publishers would have over the end product would be limitless, and as we have already seen on many, they are all too happy to wipe away a game which doesn't bring the big bucks.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is another remarkable port. Wolfenstein too - not to mention the excellent first party games from Nintendo.

I share your fears around the publisher play anywhere system that I've rambled about here - but it would be good to get true multiplat titles that you can take anywhere - like the ability to transfer saves from switch to pc for The Witcher 3 and Divinity Original Sin 2.

Now I just need to go get more, larger micro sd cards...

I don't know about you but I have too many games that released in the last few years I still need to play, let alone re-playing ones from a decade or so ago! Although it is nice seeing some proper classics of the last generation get the upgrade. Saints Row 3 is one such example and I'm actually really enjoying my time with it!

Yeah, I too have an enormous backlog - some stuff I've played, others I've not. I'm currently playing through my Steam PC games library in alphabetical order. This is a project I've been working on for some years already. I'm writing a review about each one - I'm up to Dungeon Siege 2 at the moment.
