Day One with FOG Battle Royale

in Hive Gaming2 years ago

Fog - MOBA Battle Royale is a mobile battle royale game from developer Playneta Games that I've been playing for the past few weeks. I admit that I've only played a few online battle arena type games and this one grabbed me right away and I immediately paid for the battle pass and a little extra on some unlockables. After a lot of matches (yes, going against the title day one), I've stopped playing as consistently as I was, although play a match from time to time.

Again, I want to stay true to the intent of these micro reviews and how I talk about other games, as a developer myself I know the passion and challenges that come with putting out a product and supporting it post launch. My goal is not to be critical but to offer personal observations that are meant to be constructive, not to harsh on a game.

Wins

  • Initial UI / UX: Although the elements feel borrowed, they're implemented in a way that is familiar and understandable. Had no issues discovering what I needed to get gear up and get into a game.
  • Overall visuals and performance: Solid and overall the game looks good although at times it's hard to read where monsters are especially around foliage.
  • Gameplay: There are a variety of classes to play, and levels/unlocks to gain within each class, which is fun. Overall the classes offer enough variety while being balanced well enough to allow for mixing it up from match to match.

Wishes

  • So many bots: I rarely play against actual other players and while it's good that the lobby fills quickly to start matches, the bots are very little than quick win punching bags. Would be great if the matches required fewer players to start, and even if that mean waiting a little bit, it would be more fun and challenging to play against real opponents.
  • Map size & types: The map has some good play spaces but is extremely large, way too large in fact. Additionally it's the only map available to play so the matches can feel a bit redundant. Would be great to see smaller match sizes that are restricted to maybe a smaller slice of the map.
  • Combat improvements: The targeting can definitely be a little wonky both in aim direction and sometimes priority of targets; i.e. you're hitting a monster instead of another opponent while they are both in target zone.

This looks pretty good for a mobile game I have to say. Might download to play while bored or waiting somewhere. Used to do that with Brawl Stars.

Yeah it's worth checking out and playing, just don't expect to be playing against real players very often. That's one of my biggest frustrations with the game - the matches start quickly but they're filled with bots and the bots are not very good, at all.

Also feel free to message me or whatever with mobile games you've been checking out. Always looking for people to play with who share common gaming interests if we can work it out time zone wise! :)
