The original contract was for Nintendo to create the console that could play CDs, however, Sony went ahead. At that time Nintendo did not know that Sony was a major competitor until that time Nintendo dominated the video game industry.

Well, Nintendo was competing with SEGA who did pretty good before Sony arrived. SEGA and Nintendo kind of went back and forth but yeah Nintendo was pretty much number one since 1985 and through the early 1990s.
