I find myself playing Shadow of Tomb Raider, an adventure game that focuses on the Mayan, Inca and other cultures. A game loaded with well done cultural aspects that make you believe that the whole story of the game is reality or at least that was one of the goals of the development team behind Shadow of Tomb Raider.
Me encuentro jugando a Shadow of Tomb Raider, una aventura que se centra en la cultura Maya, Inca y otras. Un juego cargado de aspectos culturales bien realizados que te hacen creer que toda la historia del juego es realidad o por lo menos eso fue uno de los objetivos del equipo de desarrollo detrás de Shadow of Tomb Raider.
I really didn't expect anything less, Tomb Raider is a game characterized by showing cultural aspects from all over the world. Lara Croft is an archaeologist and throughout her crusade, she has investigated tombs and hidden cities, full of mysterious objects belonging to each of the cultures on which each of her games is based. In Shadow of Tomb Raider, we will see how Lara enters the Amazon jungle, a jungle that is characterized by being mysterious and highly dangerous.
Yo realmente no esperaba menos, Tomb Raider es un juego característico por mostrar aspectos culturales de todo el mundo. Lara Croft es una arqueóloga y a lo largo de su cruzada, ha investigado tumbas y ciudades ocultadas, llenas de misteriosos objetos pertenecientes a cada uno de las culturas en las cuales se basa cada uno de sus juegos. En Shadow of Tomb Raider, veremos como Lara se adentra en la selva de la amazona, una selva que se caracteriza por ser misteriosa y altamente peligrosa.
The Amazon jungle is also full of many remains of ancient civilizations and EIDOS has used this to create a story rich in cultural aspects that give life to Shadow of Tomb Raider. In Shadow of Tomb Raider we will see aspects of the Mayan and Inca culture, Lara is again behind the trinity and this leads her to investigate the Mayan god Kukulkan and all the disasters that the apocalypse will unleash, according to the revelations of this God. We will know a city called Paitititi, a city of which only legends told by ancient colonizers are known. It is a lost city in the great Amazon jungle, a city full of great mysteries that will make you want to investigate everything thoroughly.
La selva del amazonas, también está llena de muchos restos de civilizaciones antiguas y de esto se ha valido EIDOS para realizar una historia rica en aspectos culturales que le dan vida a Shadow of Tomb Raider. En Shadow of Tomb Raider veremos aspectos de la cultura Maya e Inca, Lara nuevamente está detrás de la trinidad y esto le lleva a investigar al dios Maya Kukulkán y todos los desastres que va a desatar el apocalipsis, según las relevaciones de este Dios. Conoceremos una ciudad llamada Paititi, una ciudad de la cual solo se sabe leyendas que contaron antiguos colonizadores. Se trata de una ciudad perdida en esa grande selva del Amazonas, una ciudad llena de grandes misterios que te harán querer investigar todo a fondo.
All this will make Lara go from Mexico to Peru, a path that will be full of ancient culture, Mayan and Inca tombs and temples that will be charged with information based on reality. Every time we find an artifact or object from the Mayan or Inca culture, it is accompanied by an explanation about that object and what it was used for in ancient times. Those little details make you feel like a real archaeologist and, together with Lara Croft, you discover the decadence of an ancient civilization.
Todo esto hará que Lara vaya desde México hasta Perú, un camino que estará lleno de mucha cultura antigua, tumbas y templos Mayas e Incas que estarán cargados de información basada en la realidad. Cada vez que encontramos un artefacto u objeto de la cultura Maya o Inca, viene acompañado de una explicación sobre ese objeto y para que era usado en la antigüedad. Esos pequeños detalles te hacen sentir como un verdadero arqueólogo y que, junto con Lara Croft, van descubriendo la decadencia de una civilización antigua.
As you advance in the game, you discover that the Mayan, Aztec or Inca civilizations are civilizations that had many Gods and sacrifice was present to worship them. However, upon studying these cultures in depth, there are gods of which there is no record of sacrifices, but this is an aspect present in Shadow of Tomb Raider that I imagine is to enhance the grotesqueness of those civilizations.
A medida que avanzas en el juego, descubres que las civilizaciones Mayas, Aztecas o Incas, son civilizaciones que contaban con muchos Dioses y el sacrificio estaba presente para adorarlos. Sin embargo, a estudiar un poco a fondo estas culturas, hay dioses de los cuales no existe registro de sacrificios, pero este es un aspecto presente en Shadow of Tomb Raider que me imagino es para realzar lo grotesco de aquellas civilizaciones.
However, if an expert archaeologist compares the game with reality, he will find many differences. I consider that Shadow of Tomb Raider opens the door of curiosity for those who wish to delve into the Mesoamerican civilizations and discover that they are such rich cultures, that the work done by EIDOS has been quite great. The ingenuity of mixing two great civilizations and detailing objects, clothing, geroglyphs, tombs and even the language, is a work that, without a doubt, took them hours and hours of research to not be so far from reality.
Sin embargo, si un experto arqueólogo se pone a comparar el juego con la realidad, va a encontrar muchas diferencias. Considero que Shadow of Tomb Raider abre la puerta de la curiosidad para aquellas personas que deseen adentrarse en las civilizaciones mesoamericanas y descubrir que son culturas tan ricas, que el trabajo realizado por EIDOS ha sido bastante grande. El ingenio de mezclar dos grandes civilizaciones y detallar objetos, vestimenta, geroglificos, tumbas e incluso el idioma, es un trabajo que, sin duda alguna, les llevo horas y horas de investigaciones para no estar tan alejados de la realidad.
My expectations were high as it is a game set in Central and South America. I am Latin and somehow the Mesoamerican culture is part of the history we studied in high school and although I am not an expert on the subject, whenever a game is set in Latin America, we always want to show aspects of our culture that characterize us in a big way. Although Shadow of Tomb Raider did not emphasize Mexican and Peruvian culture, it has shown great things about the ancient civilizations that preceded us. It is up to us to finish investigating if what we experience in the game is 100% real or just a bit of information that awakens our curiosity to become, even if only for a few days, virtual archaeologists.
Mis expectativas eran altas al tratarse de un juego ambientado en centro y sur América. Soy latino y de alguna manera la cultura mesoamericana forma parte de la historia que estudiamos en la secundaria y aunque no soy experto en la materia, siempre que ambientan un juego en Latinoamérica, queremos que se pueda mostrar a lo grande aspectos de nuestra cultura que nos caracterizan. Si bien Shadow of Tomb Raider no enfatizo en la cultura mexicana y peruana, si ha mostrado grandes cosas de las civilizaciones antiguas que nos antecedieron. Toca de nuestra parte poder terminar de investigar si lo que vivimos en el juego es 100% real o solo una pizca de información que despierta nuestra curiosidad para convertirnos, aunque sea por unos cuantos días en arqueólogos virtuales.
If you have never played the new Tomb Raider saga, I recommend it with my eyes closed. You will enjoy a story that starts from Japan, traveling through Siberia to discover hidden things of the Prophet of Constantinople, to Mexico and Peru to enter to live the destruction announced by the prophet Kukulkan. 3 games that will take you to live an adventure full of adrenaline and will bring out the best of you and maybe discover that you have the skills to become a tomb raider.
Si nunca has jugado a la nueva saga de Tomb Raider, te la recomiendo con los ojos cerrados. Disfrutaras de una historia que comienza desde Japón, viajando por Siberia para descubrir cosas ocultas del Profeta de Constantinopla, hasta Mexico y Peru para adentrarse a vivir la destrucción anunciada por el profeta Kukulkán. 3 Juegos que te llevaran a vivir una aventura cargada de full adrenalina y sacaran los mejor de ti y quizás descubrir que tienes madera para convertirte en un saqueador de tumbas.

If there are differences between them, it may be because either it would take to long to make exact copies. Or possibly, could they have got in trouble legally of copying them, or at the very least, offended some people ?
I can see where, in these times, they may not want to offend any one in using the exact images. Just throwing ideas out there. Great topic though. Sometimes I wonder about how true to life some of the backgrounds are in games. Thanks for the post. Very enjoyable.
We can think of many reasons for developers not to do everything exactly. The interesting thing is that they partially offer players part of this Mesoamerican culture and somehow awaken the interest to learn it. Out of all that, Shadow of Tomb Raider is a real adventure. Thanks for the comment!

STOPThe cultural aspects were one of my favorite parts of the game. I found out they you are supposed to say the Maya and not the Mayan, unless you are talking about their language.
I thought this artifact description was pretty cool. So much to learn in this game if you take the time to read.
