[ENG/ESP] The Last of Us, Naughty Dog's Game that Became One of the Most acclaimed of the Decade

in Hive Gaming3 years ago

English version

For some time now one of the games that has had more visibility is The Last of Us, more with its second installment last year that, despite much criticism, technically it is very good. The thing is that I will talk a bit about the first game to say how I found it, even with all the hype that people usually put with a triple A game of this style.

Naughty Dog is a developer that has been forming and improving over the years, they always try to bring you more and more portentous and visually impressive games, and yes they have succeeded, that's what I feel most striking about their games, with what I'm obviously talking about Uncharted and The Last of Us, their latest franchises. Although they have made games focused on narrative, always the main focus was the gameplay, that is, everything that video games involve, but with this specific game they wanted to go further with the story and leave the platforming.

A little about the history of the game

Well, in The Last of Us we play Joel Miller, a father who, along with his daughter, tries to get by and survive with what he can. Like everything, obviously something breaks into the life of our protagonist, because in the city where they are explodes a virus that basically turns people into zombies. This affects the world in an incredible way, so that life on earth from here on gave a 180 degree turn, which triggered in humanity being divided by the lack of resources, where the law of the strongest applies. Here, instead of playing from the beginning, that is, as soon as the events occur, we are put about 20 years after the virus, where humanity lives more sheltered, with knowledge about the infected and with a more experienced protagonist. Joel is assigned the mission of escorting Ellie, a girl who is immune to the virus, and who is probably the cure for humanity, this is the main mission in the game, and also the most important. This synopsis would already be something even common in movies, but in video games despite not being novel, it is interesting the cinematic touch that Naughty Dog gives it.

The Last of Us™_3.png

As is common in this type of stories about zombie apocalypse, there are survivors who will lend us a hand during the adventure, they are mostly characters known by Joel himself from before the incident, but there will also be others who like our protagonist will do whatever it takes to survive. The central theme of the game is the relationship between Joel and Ellie, and how they become closer in the face of adversity, almost as if they were father and daughter. For this part I do not want to reveal more because I feel it would ruin the experience of those who have not played it, but the fact is that the best thing about The Last of Us in my opinion is its protagonist duo.

Talking about the game itself, we are facing a third-person shooter with touches of "survival horror". Here there are two types of enemies, humans and infected. Humans will try to defend themselves with guns, bats or whatever, and although they are not the most problematic, it is difficult to face them head on, especially if they have guns, although you can duck and stick to certain objects to cover yourself from the shots, something that is very useful especially when you do stealth. The infected are the star of the game in terms of enemies, not that there is so much variety, in fact there are very few types, but those that there are can be a headache depending on the difficulty you choose. There is the standard infected, i.e. a zombie, only that they do run and usually come in large numbers. There is an evolution of the normal infected, which can instakill you as soon as they touch you, the thing is that they are blind, but they can detect you by sound, so they are tough enemies to gnaw. And finally there are the large infected, which right now I do not remember the name, but they are a fairly large species that throws spores at you and take a lot of damage, they are the strongest enemies in the game, but they appear very rarely during the journey.

The weapons available to you are classic, that is, a pistol, a shotgun, a rifle, a flamethrower and a bow, the latter useful mostly for stealth. You also have the inventory, where you can make your own first aid kits and grenades by picking up trash around the stage, and yes, you literally pick up trash. Overall the movement of the game is similar to an Uncharted game, it just feels heavier, it's also because it somehow tries to be more realistic, Joel obviously doesn't have the same Spider-Man skills that Nathan Drake has.

Anyone would think that Ellie is a hindrance during the journey, because we are used to that in games the companion characters are usually half useless, like some of Silent Hill to give an example. What is really weird is with the artificial intelligence, because Ellie can be moving all over the stage and the enemies it is as if they did not see her, it does not harm the game at all, but it is to laugh when the whole story is so serious xd.

Naughty Dog's graphical prowess

In graphics it's a beast, it's a beautiful game. It came out in 2013, but even with the amount of years it has more impressive graphics and scenery than many games today, it's crazy what Naughty Dog did with this game. Even the facial expressions of the characters are to be admired, not to mention the voice acting, which sounds like a movie.

The Last of Us™_1.png

Anyway, The Last of Us is a game that I really liked, I don't think it's the holy grail that everyone thinks, nor a masterpiece, like everything, it's not a perfect game, but I understand why people love it, it's one that has a lot of good things. I recommend it to anyone, whether or not you like stories about zombies and survival, it is an experience that is not just killing, it has a good and memorable story, especially for the protagonist, which beyond what it seems, is a very interesting character, highly recommended without a doubt.

The screenshots I used in this post are my own, I took them directly from the console. Well, and until here the post, I wanted to talk a little about this game and what I had appeared, I hope you enjoyed reading it, see you!

The Last of Us™_3.png

The Last of Us™.png

The Last of Us™_1.png
