I am not sure what took so long but the classic animation, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer finally got a video game. For those that do not know, this classic animation has probably been shown each Christmas holiday season for decades on some channel. Originally released in 1964, created for NBC, this classic animation special has become a staple for programming around this holiday season – like Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin around Halloween (another classic that deserves a game). Now fans can play the game based on the classic animation.
Classic License, Classic Gameplay
From what I can tell from the trailer fans can expect a 3D adventure, something like the 101 Dalmations 2 game on the original PlayStation. A rather non-violent 3D adventure collecting things and helping other characters in each level.
What is interesting about Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is how close it appears to cling to the classic animation. It makes sense considering how the classic animation looked like most of us remember video games being when we played them in the 80s anyhow.
Imagination is an amazing thing.
All the Characters Are Accounted For
From the story telling Sam the Snowman to the reindeer family, Hermey and Yukon Corneilus and others, they are all here. The Island of Misfit toys and Bumble the giant abominable snowman/yeti creature is bigger than life just like he should be.
Seriously, if you were a fan of the animation then you are probably in the market for playing this. Maybe you have children, or gasp, grandchildren, that are fans of the television special and you want to surprise them.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam. It is about $40 as of this writing. The Steam version has a 10% launch discount in place for a limited time.
Oh i looked forward to that animation every year as a kid. Would probably still like it now. Is that you doing the voice for the videos?
I did too, I loved this one. I enjoyed it more than the Frosty the Snowman special that another channel would put on. I think it was the visuals that made it stand out to me growing up.
Yeah, that is me talking in the videos. I am working on getting over a fear of public speaking via videos like that. I used to be really anti-social so to help get over that, I started a public relations company back in 2009. I realized in the last half decade or so that public speaking is a weak point for me so I joined TikTok (where I dressed up in face paint as characters) to help get over it, continuing it on YouTube.
Rudolph getting a game feels like pure Christmas nostalgia. Love that they kept the classic animation style close to the original.
It does feel good. I grew up watching this special each year. My parents would make sure we were home to watch it.
I found out, via comments on my YouTube video, that there was a game based on this special for the Nintendo Wii and DS. It was apparently a collection of mini games and not very good so forget that crap. This is the first real game based on the holiday special, at least I think so.
Their keeping the original art style and such is just icing on the cake. A lot of people think it looks weird, it does, it is unique. I do not know of any other specials that looked like this.
Totally! Keeping the original art style really nails the nostalgia—makes it feel just like watching the special again. 🎄
It does! Hopefully this does well and we see more releases like this with other specials and one offs from back in the day. There are tons of them that could make fun games. Besides, there is not a lot of competition in the Christmas game category.
Definitely! There’s a lot of potential for other holiday classics. Imagine a whole lineup of nostalgic Christmas games. 😁
