THE GARDEN VENUE

Straight from the pages of a Country Garden magazine - or so it should be! The most sought after venue for weddings, family portraits and special occasions is smack bang in the heart of our semi desert farming community. Tucked away like a precious jewel and little known to the outside world. This magnificent garden epitomizes all that I have come to know and love of my Karoo home. Surrounded by miles of dust and rock and barren expanses. Where only the hardened and determined survive; this pristine English garden is like a beacon of life, hope, serenity and vitality! In the shade of the mountain range, fed by mountain waterfalls and underground springs; there is no other way this eighth generation farm would flourish.

image.png

The farm was established by the marriage of British and Dutch settlers. The peacemaking tradition lives on in the family of the British descendent farmer and his Afrikaans wife - whose forefathers would've been on opposite sides of the Blood River in bygone centuries. Their family graveyard bears the names of both British and Dutch sides.

Now, while her husband and their sons farm the lands, the lovely (and aptly named) Joy nurtures her gardens.

image.png

Her rose bushes too have been there for generations and their incredible scent fills the air. Mingling intoxicatingly with wisteria, hyacinth, alyssum, magnolia and gardenia.

image.png

Bird songs fill the air. Occasionally broken by the obnoxious call of their flock of peacock or a faraway tractor. Bees and butterflies move in exhilaration among the perpetual blooms. The distant murmur of the waterfalls trickling into their numerous dams is a delight to the ears.

image.png

Although her private home, the gracious lady is always welcomes guests to view her pride and joy. Sipping tea in the shaded gardens and hearing her historical accounts is like a trip in a floral time machine. The experience is surreal.

image.png

The special garden has hosted many weddings and Joy's floral arrangements have comforted many sad hearts. It is a haven to many and when not tending it like a mother hen, she is arranging her gift of flowers for various celebrations.

Despite being winter, the garden of Joy still beckons the lonely, sad and weary. It seems like time and season barely has an effect on this delightful oasis.

Oh my goodness this place is spectacular! Joy filled for sure!

So true! I could spend many quiet hours there. And how are you and your little garden?

When I try to get to sleep, I imagine laying in a garden like this. How heavenly!

@carolynstahl that's the perfect way to get asleep

It truly is like a dream

In all honesty, we have a neighbour with a garden like this one, where the grass is always well trimmed, and everything so well manucured, it's incredible the time that it takes to have a beautiful garden, it's a full time job!

Your garden looks like one of those royal gardens! It's so beautiful 😍
I wish to take a walk in your garden! ☺️☀️

You're right! It does look royal.....although it is not mine

Wow amazing! What a treasure! I bet it makes you want to go home and work on your own place - I always feel woefully inadequate when I see places like this! Thanks for sharing such an incredible and inspiring garden! And I'll quickly comment on the other one here, if I may - when you see the size of this week's garden journal wrap up you'll understand! Loved the giraffes - omg I love giraffes! What an incredible extended back garden you have, with such creatures roaming about. I hope to spot whales this weekend to match such wonder! Thanks for joining in Bucks! xx

It does kind of make one feel inadequate. But on the flip side they have far more water than we could ever throw at our homestead if we pumped the borehole 24/7!
Best you get to some whale watching or people may think all you do is talk about mushrooms 😏

Bahahahahahahahaha... that's the state of it at the moment! Although I have been surfing ALL WEEK with my bestie... no mushrooms in sight, except for the pickled pine caps I had with my dinner - oh look here I go again!

Sounds like a true oasis in the dry countryside you reside in. Delightful to enjoy a walk around taking in the perfume from what looks to be an amazing variety planted over the years.

It truly is! It is one of my favourite places to be. The peace really permeates along with the perfume

Relaxing places, always amazed by some who are able to create over a couple of generations a peaceful haven filled with life like this.

Thank you so much!

It looks just like an English country garden, although I would imagine that the birds and butterflies it attracts are a bit more exotic than we have here in England.

Probably. Especially as we have all sorts of sunbirds and indigenous South African wildlife too

Such a lovely place 🙂

The daffodils on the right side of the narrow road in the first picture are my favorite flowers. There is one on the left, but the ones on the right are more pronounced.

In such a garden, the average human lifespan increases! 😊

Oh yes! As the stress levels decrease

Cool garden and flowers 💕💐

Wow it a beautiful place with different colorful flowers

It is quite breathtaking. A sensory overload and yet in a calming, comforting way

Thanks for sharing

The location is very beautful.....such an exclusive place in my opinion. Beautiful garden, romantic setting...Love to feel all the scents!

Those scents really are very sensory! And yes, romantic exactly sums it up! A whimsically romantic garden

show-off

🤣
You know what to do little brother

As you said it's the perfect place to take wedding pictures
Such a beauty place

No way this has a wedding vibe on it. I love it so muchhhhh

Oh my oh my! All I see is beauty! What a magnificent place to behold. I can imagine how much work it takes to upkeep a place like this but oh so worth it! I can also imagine how beautiful the weddings are that takes place there.

Thanks for sharing ~

Oh my sweet goddess - that planting of wisteria and hyacinth nearly makes me weep with nostalgia. Gorgeous garden and such a lovely post - well done, you!
