More than 450 cultivars of apple are now grown in the hilly state . In terms of commercial importance, the main varieties are Royal Delicious, Rich-A-Red, Red Delicious and Golden Delicious, Granny Smith.

Granny smith apples have a grass-green peel, with white dots. The crunchy and juicy flesh is tarty-acidic and makes a great choice for processing pies, cakes, and pastries.

It mainly grows in Himachal Pradesh and has high levels of antioxidants and phenols.

Production of apple is not an easy process it require lots of hardwork and patience along with proper care.

Apple trees unfortunately are susceptible to many insect and disease issues and require special attention. By properly controlling insects and disease, fertilizing and regularly pruning the trees you can enjoy the beauty and fruit of this tree on your landscape for years.

During the early spring and summer fungicide applications are essential to prevent disease and produce healthy, high quality fruit.

At the beginning of the growing season horticultural oils should also be used to smother scale insects and reduce over wintering populations of aphid and mite eggs.

All dead or diseased branches should be pruned, and any dried up apples, fallen leaves and plant debris should be removed away from trees.

The most important time to prune is late winter, before you see any signs of new growth. Prune off damaged limbs as well as branches that grow too close to the main branches. Thin out crowded and crossing twigs.

Apple trees require full sun, so choose a spot where the sun shines directly on the tree for at least 8 hours each day if you wishes to grow them.

This post was very informative! I had no idea of all the healthy benefits of apples, nor did I know of all that was required when growing your apple tree!

At our house (inherited from my in-laws) we have 3 apple trees on the back of the property that apparently weren't taken very good care of. They have only been there for about 10-15 years and are supposed to be standard sized tree, not the dwarf sized that you talked about above. I guess they didn't know how to prune or take care of them because they no longer produce fruit :(

Do you know of anyway to save these trees? Or are they just done for?

First you need to check the variety of apple trees you have, then check the soil conditions and add manure, fertilizer accordingly. Prune them in winters and to protect them from pest spray timely with insecticide and pesticides. I hope this can help @the13anarchist

Awesome thank you so much! I will definitely check them out and find out what type of apple they are and I'll definitely let you know how it goes! :)
