Hey Everyone!!
Gardening is a joyful journey, and recently I decided to take a small step into it by growing pumpkin and bottle gourd plants on my terrace. With great excitement, I purchased two grow bags of 18 x 16 inches, along with seeds of both vegetables. After filling the bags with soil, I placed them in a sunny spot on my terrace to ensure the plants would receive ample sunlight throughout the day.
Before sowing, I soaked the seeds in water and kept them in the fridge overnight, a trick I read somewhere to improve germination. The next day, I sowed four seeds of each vegetable into their respective grow bags. To my delight, in just a week, the tiny green shoots pushed through the soil. It was such a beautiful feeling to see life sprouting from the soil with my care and effort.
Out of the eight seeds, three bottle gourd and two pumpkin plants sprouted. Initially, everything seemed perfect. The seedlings looked strong and promising. But soon, I noticed changes that made me nervous. The bottle gourd plants, which had grown tall with thin stems, started to bend and lie flat on the soil. One of the pumpkin plants also started showing signs of weakness.
I quickly gave them support using small bamboo sticks to help them grow upright and not touch the soil directly. However, despite this support, their health didn’t seem to improve. I began to worry about what could be going wrong. My terrace is completely open, so the plants get full sunlight, and I water them twice daily—once in the morning and once in the evening.
Considering the early summer heat and intense sunlight, I started to wonder if harsh sun rays might be affecting the delicate young plants. The heat could be too much for them at this stage, or maybe they’re getting over watered or underwatered.
Have you ever faced a similar situation with your plants? If yes, I would love to hear your suggestions. I’m still learning and would really appreciate any tips on how to protect these young plants and help them thrive. My biggest hope is to see them grow strong and eventually bear fruits. Fingers crossed for a happy harvest!
