A few years ago, I bought a tomato seed. This seed was produced at the agricultural institute where I worked. It is a small, apple-shaped tomato.
Once, I planted some seeds in some planters, and they did really well—I was even able to harvest the tomatoes. Here are some photos of that first planting.
I have a friend whose parents live in a rural area, and I gave her a packet of seeds so she could try them out to see if they would still germinate.
They kindly sent me the photos so I could see their plants already in production.
They prepared the seedbeds, and the seeds germinated very well. They hadn’t lost their viability despite the passage of time.
When the plants grew, they produced some good tomatoes. The seeds hadn't lost their vigor.
Those seeds have been shared with other people in the community, who have also planted them and harvested their own tomatoes. My friends have planted them several times, always with good results. They gave me some tomatoes to try. They have a great flavor and texture.
This seed has maintained its quality, and this is a very important factor in achieving good yields.
When it is not possible to purchase certified seeds and the only option is to collect seeds from the fruits, it is important to keep the following in mind.
Select the best fruits—those with the best characteristics and free from disease or pest damage.
Once the fruits have been harvested, extract the seeds and wash them, especially if they are covered by a layer of mucilage, such as the seeds of papaya, tomato, or passion fruit. These should be dried in the shade.
Select the best seeds, discarding the smallest, hollow, and misshapen ones.
Store them in containers that are as airtight as possible in a cool, dry place until planting time.
A few days ago, I sent another package of seeds to my friends so they could distribute them among their acquaintances in the community, encouraging them to plant them in their backyards and harvest their own tomatoes. I’m even feeling inspired to plant again myself. When I do, I’ll share the results with you.

Hola amigos amantes de los jardineria y del cultivo de plantas.
Hace unos años compre una semilla de tomate de una variedad que se había producido en el instituto agricola donde trabaje. Es un tomate de pequeño tamaño tipo manzano.
En una oportunidad sembre estas semillas en unos materos y se dieron muy bién y pude cosechar los tomates. Aqui les muestro las fotografias de esa primera siembra.
A una amiga cuyos padres viven en una zona rural, le regale un paquete de semillas para que las probaran y ver si todavia germinaban. Ellos gentilmente me enviaron las fotografias para que viera sus plantas ya en producción.
Ellos hicieron los semilleros y las semillas germinaron muy bien. No habían perdido su viabilidad a pesar del tiempo almacenada.
Cuando las plantas crecieron produjeron unos buenos tomates. Las semillas no habia perdido su vigor.
Esas semillas han sido compartidas con otras personas de la comunidad que tambien las han sembrado y han cosechado sus tomates. Mis amigos han sembrado varias veces siempre con buenos resultados. Me regalaron varios tomates para que los probara. Tienen muy buen sabor y textura.
Esta semilla ha mantenido su calidad y esto es un factor muy importante para obtener buenos rendimientos.
Cuando no es posible comprar semilla certificada y la opcion es recolectar la semilla de los frutos, es bueno tomar en cuenta lo siguiente.
Seleccionar los mejores frutos, aquellos que tenga las mejores características y que no tengan enfermedades ni daños por plagas.
Una vez recogidos los frutos extraer la semilla, lavarlas sobre todo si tienen una capa de mucílagos que las recubra, como por ejemplo la semilla de lechosa, de tomate o de parchita. Estas debe secarse a la sombra.
Seleccionar las mejores semillas, eliminando las mas pequeñas, las vanas y las deformes.
Guardarlas en evases lo mas herméticos posible en un lugar seco y fresco, hasta la siembra.
En dias pasado les envie otro paquete de semillas a mis amigos para que la distribuyan entre sus conocidos en la comunidad, y también las siembren en sus patios y cosechen sus tomates.
Hasta yo estoy animada para volver a sembrar y evaluar la semilla. Cuando lo haga les comparto los resultados.

Me hiciste recordar los años que viví en Carayaca. Allí aprendí a trabajar la tierra y me enamore de la agricultura. Aún me gusta sembrar pero ya no vivo allí. Y donde estoy ahora pues, no cuento con espacio suficiente para hacerlo y la tierra es muy mala.
Pero leerte me trajo gratos recuerdos. 👍

Muchas gracias por tu comentario y me alegra que te haya traido esos gratos recuerdos. Carayaca es una zona sgrícola muy hermosa. Ojalá que en un futuro puedas tener la posibilidad de volver a sembrar. A mi también me gusta la agricultura, mi trabajo me permitió conocer sobre los cultivos pero me gustaria dedicarme a producir en el campo.
