With a break in the cold spell we have had, I took advantage of the nice weather. I got the water set up to start the lettuce in the #hydroponics and brought out all the cold-hardy vegetables I had started in February.
The plants that I brought out included the onions, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, parsley, cilantro, and cabbages.
Each of these can handle a cool greenhouse even if the temps drop in to the 30's. I have a heater that will automatically turn on if it drops below 45 degrees F.
I had put this tray of perennial seeds out into the snow at the end of February to stratify. Now, that all the snow has melted I put it into the greenhouse; here's hoping that the seeds will germinate.
I had a few yellow potatoes starting to sprout so I halved them and let them sit on the counter to scab over. I pulled out one of the grow bags from the shed and planted them on the patio.
Throughout the fall and early winter, I throw torn up egg cartons, eggshells, kitchen scraps and coffee grounds into the raised beds. This is what it looked like after the snow melted. I turned it over mixing it well along with the other two frames.
It only took a few minutes to get them turned over enough to cover all the pieces.
All the sections in the vegetable garden got a light raking over and any leaves removed.
It felt so good to be out in the sunshine and getting the vegetable gardens ready for planting next month.
This garden area is mostly shade due to the Kouza Dogwood that shades it during the summer months. I got this all cleaned out and the Iris and Peonies are already popping up. The Foxglove plants look pretty good, but I may move them to sunnier spots, perhaps I can find room in one of the butterfly gardens.
I had to laugh once I was done with these two areas at how much my upper back had tightened up. I guess I should find some upper-body workouts to get into better gardening shape, lol.
Until next time, this is Sunscape

I appreciate you, @ewkaw. ♥
Wow! That’s a lot of preparation before the planting season in spring! You have quite a list of vegetables to be consumed in the near future!
I often injured my muscles while doing too much hard work in the garden too. It’s a test of how unfit. I had become. So, I had to start working with dumbbells!🙀😂
I hear you! I do use dumbbells and try to get a little exercise in but raking and cleaning out gardens uses a whole other set of muscles. ;-)
I found out I still need to do other exercises as well. I need to go swimming soon!
Swimming is my favorite! The water is so peaceful to me. My neighbor has a pool and she lets me use it anytime I want. This year will be good for me to strengthen my legs after hip surgeries.
I always think it sounds great to throw those things out in the garden all winter, but my garden is quite a distance from the house, and the gate has to be kept shut so the deer don't get the idea that it's fun to go in there, even in the winter. And then the snow is too deep to open the gate, and I'd have to climb over the heaps where my husband plows the snow. So I don't throw anything out there.
Well, I see that could be quite the hassle. Maybe you could use a barrel during the winter closer to the house, then add them in the spring. ;-)
one of the way growing the potato, cut the half. its good 😍
Thanks, I think so. I got them planted.
Yup, that's why I do the gym (back when I could get there) or exercise class so I will be in some sort of shape when I start back in the gardens...
I can't believe you are planting potatoes in March! My ground is still frozen...
I planted the potatoes in a grow bag as they couldn't wait any longer. I will do more when it gets closer to April. I put it in the greenhouse for now. It will do fine. The temps keep fluctuating so much it will be interesting to see when I can plant the large cold frame.
Its still very much snowing here (I am close to Alaska), so I only started planting seeds 3 days ago, altho I feel its still too early. I normally start closer to end of March if not 2nd week of April 😅
I started a bit too early this year too, I should have watched the weather pattern more and then waited a few more weeks. The plants are getting big already, yikes!
