There is a Hash House Harriers in Antarctica

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY3 years ago

I constantly tell people that the Hash House Harriers is an extremely widespread group that has chapters in every country in the world on all the continents. People sometimes don't believe me because of the fact that there is no centralized leadership, there are no rules, there's no registration and the group doesn't advertise at all.

We recently had a visitor whose Hash name is "Icehole" and he told us about the time that he was working with the United States Antarctic Program and they even had a Hash chapter there!

It sounds unbelievable since this is one of the most impossible to live in areas on the planet, let alone exercise in, but we had no reason to not believe him, especially after he showed us a few photos. It is certainly a different experience than running and Hashing here in tropical Thailand, that is for sure.

He told us that it is slightly different there because of many reasons, the main one being that someone getting lost is a bit more than an inconvenience since the temperature drop at night will almost certainly kill you. Therefore, they tend to stick together a bit more and when the Hares go out to set the trail they obviously can't use white powder the way we do here because well, the entire continent already is white.

Also, after the runs they don't sit on ice the way that we do here and most other Hashes in the world.

I would imagine if they wanted to replicate the sitting on the ice part of the ordeal they would need only to sit on the ground. They also have a very different stance towards their athletic equipment since shorts and running shoes would probably be a potentially deadly situation.

I was surprised to see that these guys would have this sort of freedom at a research facility but I learned a lot from "Icehole" about how things work down there and they are all just regular dudes who happen to know a thing or two about some very specific sciences. Other than that, they are not stoic humorless jerks that we might imagine. I particularly loved one quote he had that was something along the lines of "Don't get the wrong idea, we are not all alcoholics down there.... alcoholics go to meetings."

So I don't know if I would really enjoy doing a run in such an environment because as far as I know, there isn't any foliage there at all. I know very little about the continent and didn't get to talk to "Icehole" for very long since he was, quite deservingly, the center of attention at our recent meetup. I did find it interesting that all of their beer, which obviously has to be shipped or flown in, is provided to them for free! He also stated that no one on the other end ever questions how much of it they order, if they order 400 cases, 400 cases arrive the following weed. Amazing!

It just goes to show that HHH chapters are literally everywhere. There is probably one near you and you should do a little search to see if there is one in your area. Chances are there is one, and I promise you will have a great time if you join them.

Of course if you are in our area in Northern Thailand I encourage you to get in touch with us and come have some fun, get a little exercise, and make some great friends! We are still doing at least 3 meetups a week and you can find full details on our official website

Well this is just pathetic. Antarctica, which has a population of maybe 50 people has a HHH but here in a city of over a million we can't garner enough interest to get one going. To be fair I suppose there probably isn't that much to do in Antarctica outside of trying really hard to not freeze to death.

I think you need to start small, like maybe just find a group of people who want to run first, then focus on making it a real Hash. Most H3's that have difficulty getting started have to use this method first, otherwise it is just too complicated.

when exercising here in Chiang Mai I always complain about the intense heat and humidity. I would imagine that is not much of an issue at this particular Hash :) I bet it was really interesting to talk to a guy that has been down there. I find the entire place to be quite terrifying though. I wouldn't go even if someone else was paying for it

He was an unusual visitor, that is for sure and I say that he was actually more interesting than the guy that brought bagpipes with him for the circle. Too bad you weren't there for that!

This has me wondering if there is one in Suriname now......

I did a little searching around and sadly couldn't find one there. Not that you would be able to participate anyway seeing as how you seem to be lockdown city in that country at the moment.
