Create a Relaxing Oasis at Home: How to Setup a Rooftop Garden

Hi friends,

In Vietnam, rooftop gardens are a popular and unique way to add a touch of nature to city living. From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the charming back alleys of Ho Chi Minh City, you'll no doubt spot a rooftop garden here and there – and they're just as delightful as they sound! There's something special about the combination of urban living and nature, and rooftop gardens offer a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Yesterday I visited my friend's home and his new garden rooftop, so today I wanted to share photos and ramble on a bit about rooftop gardens.

So, it should go without saying if you're looking for a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a rooftop garden is a perfect way to create a peaceful oasis in your own home.

Not only will adding plants and greenery to your rooftop provide a tranquil atmosphere, but it can also improve the air quality of your home and help you save money on your energy bills. Setting up a rooftop garden is not as difficult as it might seem, and with a bit of planning and preparation, you'll can have a beautiful and tranquil haven in no time. Or at least I think so... let see..

Benefits of having a rooftop garden

Plenty of benefits can be gained from creating a rooftop garden at home. It will add a bit of green to your rooftop and help clean the air in your home, save you money on energy bills, and add value to your home.

First and foremost, rooftop gardens are great for the environment. Plants naturally clean the air around them by removing harmful toxins like carbon dioxide, ozone, and nitrogen dioxide and emitting clean oxygen back into the air.

When you have a rooftop garden, you're helping reduce pollution and creating a healthier environment for you and your family. Rooftop gardens are also a great way to save money both in the short and long term. Growing your own plants and vegetables at home allows you to decrease your reliance on buying expensive store-bought plants and groceries.

With a rooftop garden, you'll have easy access to fresh, organic produce whenever you need it, and you'll be able to save a bundle on your grocery bills.

Things to consider before setting up a rooftop garden

Before you set up a rooftop garden, there are a few things you'll want to consider first to ensure the success of your garden.

Space

  • one of the first things to consider before setting up a rooftop garden is how much space you'll have to work with. Most rooftop gardens will take up anywhere from four to 12 square feet of space, so ensure you have enough room on your rooftop before setting anything up.

Light

  • another essential factor to consider before setting up a rooftop garden is how much light the plants in your garden will need. While most plants need sunlight to survive, some plants need more light than others. Before setting up your garden, determine which plants need how much light.

Watering

  • there are a few different options for watering your rooftop garden. You can either use a watering system or hand water your plants. If you decide to hand water, make sure you have an easy system in place that will allow you to water your plants without needing to climb up onto your roof. Also, think about the added weight on your home. Most times that will not be an issue, but dirt that is wet does add weight and may cause issues on roofs that aren't meant for that extra load.

How a rooftop garden can help you think better.

Many think rooftop gardening is only suitable for aesthetics and nothing else. But gardeners who tend to rooftop gardens have claimed that their hobby has helped them feel better.

The act of tending to a living thing can have a positive effect on your mind and body. Studies have shown that gardening can help improve mood, reduce stress, and even lower blood pressure. When you're gardening, you're doing more than just growing plants. You're also taking care of yourself by being mindful, getting exercise, being creative, and being social. All of these things combined help to improve your mental state of being.

Greenery

  • rooftops are perfect spaces for adding greenery to your garden to provide a lush and serene aesthetic that is often lacking in rooftop gardens. Greenery can provide privacy and shade to your rooftop while also helping to make your garden look more beautiful and lush.

Many different types of plants can be used as rooftop greenery.

Water Feature

  • another easy way to enhance the ambience and atmosphere of your rooftop garden is by adding a simple water feature. Water features can help mask unwanted noise and create a soothing sound for your rooftop garden.

Common mistakes to avoid when creating a rooftop garden

While rooftop gardening is a wonderful hobby to take up, it's important to remember to avoid making these common mistakes.

  • Not doing your research - as we've already discussed, when setting up your rooftop garden it's important to do your research first. Not doing your research can lead to a less-than-desirable end result and can be costly as well.
  • Not caring for your plants - rooftop gardens are no different than any other gardens and require regular maintenance and upkeep to keep them thriving. If you don't properly care for your plants, they won't last long in your garden and won't grow or produce as they should.
  • Forgetting to water your plants - rooftop gardens are especially susceptible to drying out faster than other gardens. Make sure you're watering your plants regularly to prevent them from dying.

Conclusion

There are few things more rewarding than growing your food and plants. And while many people think that growing your plants is difficult, in reality, it's easier than you might think. Creating a rooftop garden is a beautiful way to enjoy the outside from the sanctum of your home.
