Welcome to ASEAN Hive, wow what a post!!! You could've broken this into a part 1, 2, and 3, and it would still be a good read. I worked with a few Filipina teachers here in Cambodia that weren't fluent in Tagalog, and the other Filipina/o co-workers found it quite amusing. I guess the situation is a bit like yours, where English is basically your second language, and that's useful especially for international travel.
