Do NOT attempt to relocate street puppies yourself

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY4 years ago

This of course doesn't apply to western nations where all stray animals are picked up eventually by animal control but moreso for nations like the one that I live in and most likely a vast majority of the world.

Lately, someone has spread the word that they should bring puppies that they find on the street to our location and while it may sound that I am trying to save our own finances, I am trying to save the dog, and it's mother, a lot of undue stress.

Yes, I realize that it is hard to resist that cute face and you think you are doing the right thing by picking it up but the way that a lot of these stray puppies work is that mom has to go out and find food to eat so that she can continue to feed the pups with her milk. Most of the time the puppies will stick around wherever it is that Mum has decided is home and maybe wander around a bit.

When you pick the dog up, or even worse, relocate it to another location you cause a lot of stress for the puppy and also for the mother when she returns to find that one of her babies is no longer there.

Although I know that people mean well, relocating group of puppies to a temple is a terrible idea. The dogs that live at the temples already have probably become territorial and they may become aggressive towards the puppies who are probably already very confused and afraid as it is. Also, mom may return to the "nest" and then go on a long search to find her babies only to end up getting hit by a car in the process.

A basket of puppies that was recently brought to us.. I know the person meant well but we actually returned the to where the good Samaritan found them

The best thing you can do in this situation is to keep an eye on them for 24 hours and make sure that mom actually returns. Even though you might feel bad for them since they are living outdoors the safest place they can be during this very vulnerable time in their lives is with mama. If you really want to help perhaps give mama some food so that she doesn't have to wander so far in order to provide for her family.

If you are in the Krabi region or a number of other places in Thailand you can inform us, or the local animal welfare center about their location and we can come by and schedule an appointment to get the mom sterilized to prevent this from happening in the future, vaccinate the entire family to prevent a wide-variety of diseases, and also take photos to try to help with adoption.

Dropping the puppies off right now is an exercise in futility because I think I speak for most animal welfare organizations in the world right now when I say that our facilities are beyond full already and our financing is always on the brink of bankruptcy due to the near complete drop in donations due to tourism being completely eliminated.

You would do a much better service to the doggy family just by leaving them be and providing them with some food. I do appreciate the people out there that are trying to help but separating puppies from their mothers is one of the worst things you can do.

When I was a kid my grandparents would tell me on their farm that you should not touch or relocate the kittens that we would find in the barns. I don't know if this is true of if they were just messing with us but they said that if you touch really young kittens the mother will no longer look after them. Sounds like BS to me but who knows.

i don't know if that is true but I am not a veterinarian. It seems like horse-feathers to me though. I think maybe your grandparents were trying to prevent you from moving them too far as a kid would do and then stressing out the mother cat because she can't find her babies.

But it is sage advice anyway because the babies best bet for survival is to be in the protection of their mother.
