RE: Beautiful Spanish Patio I would Love to Have !!!

I agree...there are so many ways to really grow anything. In my former garden.. I used cracker containers to plant my lettuce, had been successful in growing them and I have collected these containers over the years..I think I had about more than 20. I out them up on the rooftop to avoid the slugs on my garden ground..

Sort:

I struggle with anything in containers come summer here. We get a lot of days around 40°C and up, so if I forget water at any point, they're gone. Some people manage it, but I'm too scatterbrained. 😆 I have great admiration for anyone growing in containers.

Oh, I know the heat is unbearable for the container plants, but there are some vegetable sorts that stand the heat... We do not get that 40° in Summer in Vienna so my container plants are doing fine at 32°C or so. Here in Spain, it could go up to more than 40°C in Summer, but I only have my Mediterranean plants. They stood the heat even without being watered. I thought I might show you my past lettuce in cracker containers ...

They look amazing! I wonder if I could get some sort of grow room going indoors. I want lettuce in summer, for cool, fresh make, but lettuce likes cool roots. Currently all ours are going to seed. I only ever get them growing well in winter when I want warmer meals. 😕

If I would have the chance and space...I like to grow my salad greens and tomatoes using hydroponic system, you won´t need soil, just water in cycle and nutrients... But I would like to have it certified organic. One can even grow salad indoor with LED lights using this system and added to that grown them vertically to save space.

If you have heard about the Plastic tents in Almeria (Spain), most of the vegetables distributed in Europe come from there and most farmers use hydroponic system because of space issues. Most farmers in the EU are subsidised and are strictly regulated, so the farmers can´t just grow as they like.

I'd love to add aquaponics to our growing system (my husband loves fish). Just where to fit it, though...
