In October, I returned on my own to Costa Verde in Sardinia. At this time of the year, the beach is deserted, the summer heat is over, the autumn storms start. It is the best time for me to go to the sea.
I was alone with my camera, the whipping wind, the sea, and the sun. I walked a few kilometers along the beach until it turned into sharp, steep rocks. Here the swell was strongest, and I could hardly stop photographing the waves with their infinite variations. The hard contrasts only became softer towards the evening when a mixture of whirled up sand and light fog settled over the beach. Towards sunset, I persuaded myself to go back to the car. The coast can only be reached here via an almost 20 km long track of sand and gravel. I wanted to drive the least paved part in daylight. The only hotel here had already closed a few days ago. It was the end of the season, and I did not know yet that an ugly virus would make my trip in spring impossible.
Im Oktober kehrte ich nach Costa Verde auf Sardinien zurück. Jetzt ist der Strand menschenleer, die Sommerhitze ist vorbei und die Herbststürme beginnen. Das ist für mich die beste Zeit, um ans Meer zu fahren.
Ich war allein mit meiner Kamera, dem peitschenden Wind, dem Meer und der Sonne. Ich lief ein paar Kilometer am Strand entlang, bis er sich in scharfe, steile Felsen verwandelte. Hier war der Wellengang am stärksten, und ich konnte kaum aufhören, die Wellen mit ihren unendlichen Variationen zu fotografieren. Die harten Kontraste wurden erst gegen Abend weicher, als sich eine Mischung aus aufgewirbeltem Sand und leichtem Nebel über den Strand legte. Gegen Sonnenuntergang überredete ich mich, zurück zum Auto zu gehen. Die Küste ist hier nur über eine fast 20 km lange Strecke aus Sand und Kies zu erreichen. Den am wenigsten gepflasterten Teil wollte ich bei Tageslicht fahren. Das einzige Hotel hier hatte schon vor einigen Tagen geschlossen. Es war das Ende der Saison, und ich wusste noch nicht, dass ein hässlicher Virus meine Reise im Frühling unmöglich machen würde.
