Gazing Into The Abyss

"If you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you." --- Friedrich Nietzsche

Pretty sure the internet is the digital analogue of the abyss. How many hours have we spent staring at apps that are specifically engineered to absorb as much of our attention as possible?

You go to check a single notification and the next thing you know it's twenty five minutes later and all you have to show for it are some cat videos.

Suck my algorithm, bitfuckers! Sometimes you just have to unplug from the Matrix. Metaverse, Matrix, what's the difference?

This planet is going to hell in a handbasket. Or not. Either way the outcome won't be measurably affected by following the proceedings in real time.

In a way, Nietzsche predicted the rise of social media. You gaze upon it and it gazes back. Then it sells the data it spies. Zuckerberg and his buddies get rich off distracting us, but what do we even get out of it?

Might be a good time to find a new abyss to gaze into. Preferably one in the boonies.

Sort:

I wouldn't mind gazing into the abyss of those goat eyes instead of screening out.

Lol, yeah goat eyes beats doomscrolling hands down.

I'm afraid that long gaze would cause some abyss fight, it's a shame that the screens don't have that option, like a slap in the face if it gets too long

Lol, that would be kind of beautiful, or at the very least would reduce the amount of aimless doomscrolling. My brother uses an app to keep him from staring at instagram and the like for too long but that just doesn't sound like as much fun.

At least it would reduce shared stupidity I'm seeing lately over there.
I do also have app on phone that reminds to chill a bit if I'm too long on the screen.

I love goat photography, I remember years ago when I got to have some goats that I raised with my mom.

Nice! How many did you have? We had a pet goat for a while, they're fun. Make for fun photo subjects too.

We used to have up to 60 goats, but for reasons of moving to another city we no longer have them, but it is true that they are very funny and friendly animals.

Goats save us from the abyss!

Lol, that they do! When I was a kid we had one for a pet, they're something else.

I wonder... isn't social media something that spawned from our needs, our needs, but badly interpreted?

Evolution is practically trial and error, and it seems we're deep into the error phase right now.

I'm a lover of the analog, but can't help not to try and see the bigger picture. It feels sad, but I also think we always get what we want, as a whole. It's just, some of us didn't want it.

Anyway, came here for the pictures, and they're wonderful.

Social media caters to our needs but I think it's more a case of 'created to exploit' rather than 'spawned from'.

Indeed, trial and error, luck and random chance. Lol, aren't we always deep in the error phase?

Is there a bigger picture here? It seems like it's a bunch of companies doing whatever they can to maximize the bottom line which ultimately amounts to us staring at screens an absurd amount of time.

we always get what we want

That we do, unfortunately. Lol, that could be a whole other blog post.

Thank you, and thanks for dropping by!

I think social media started from a real need of connection, but it got hijacked at some point when some individuals figured out they could make heaps of money through it.

And then they started pouring money into psychological research to find out what makes us stare at a screen for hours and hours.

And now, here we are.

The only solution I see is education. But who cares about education when you've got all those stupid funny videos on TikTok?

The bigger picture is that our brains haven't changed that much since 10.000 years ago, and that's why they get exploited by the technology created today. I think understanding this is the first step. But again, who cares? The majority doesn't, for sure. And the minority is ignored.

Oh, there's so much to discuss on this topic, but I'll stop here.

It's sad, when you think that few people understand what's happening and that even fewer care about the matter.

So true with the Matrix/Metaverse. I unplug regularly with nature walks and lots of dancing 💃

Love the pictures 💙

You've gotta unplug or else it will get to you after a while. Those sound like lovely ways to unplug :)

Thank you!

Oh it got me many times before, so I had to learn to unplug eventually. Dancing is my happy pill 😍💙
