Street portrait photography is an exciting and challenging photographic category... In the street you can't tell people things like: Stand there, smile, turn your head, stop there... Not for heaven's sake!... At least I couldn't do things like that in the streets of my village!... Doing this here is constantly dealing with the light, shooting wide open and not allowing people to pose, sometimes you have to take the portrait while the person is saying something to you... It's all so unpredictable! And yet, after a while you develop a kind of "instinct" for this yourself, which makes you no longer think about when, how or where.... You just shoot when you feel the picture!... That's how it is...
EL retrato callejero es una categoría fotográfica apasionante y también desafiante... En la calle no puedes decirle a las personas cosas como: Párate allí, sonríe, gira la cabeza, detente allí... ¡No por todos los cielos!... ¡Cuando menos yo no podría hacer las cosas así en las calles de mi pueblo!... Hacer esto aquí es lidiar constantemente con la luz, disparar a boca de jarro y sin permitir que las personas posen, en ocasiones hay que hacer el retrato mientras la persona está diciendo algo a ti... ¡Es todo tan impredecible!... Y sin embargo, después de un tiempo uno mismo desarrolla una especie de "instinto" para esto, el cual hace que ya no pienses cuando, ni como ni donde... ¡Simplemente disparas cuando sientes la foto!... Así es esto...
"Mrs. Aura"/"La Señora Aura"
If I did not know Mrs. Aura and I met her on any street and heard her speak, I am sure that I would immediately think that she is an angel who took the form of an old woman and came to this world to heal souls... Mrs. Aura's voice is a therapy in itself, even the air around her seems to have the quality of comforting others. She always speaks of doing the right thing, of working with discipline and she says it all with the certainty and affection that a mother can when speaking to her son.... I don't know how this happens, and I don't know if others notice it, but Mrs. Aura has something that goes beyond the earthly in the way she is...
Sí yo no conociese a la Sra. Aura y la encontrase en cualquier calle y la escuchase hablar, estoy seguro de que de inmediato yo pensaría que se trata de un ángel que tomó forma de anciana y vino a este mundo a sanar almas... La voz de la Sra. Aura es una terapia en si misma, incluso el aire que la rodea parece tener la cualidad de tranquilizar a otros. Ella siempre habla de hacer lo correcto, de trabajar con disciplina y lo dice todo con la certeza y el cariño que puede hacerlo una madre cuando habla a un hijo... No sé como ocurre esto, ni sé si otros se percatan, pero la Sra. Aura tiene algo que va más allá de lo terreno en su forma de ser...
"Porte telling a story"/"Porte contando una historia"
You already know my friend Porte, lately he has been appearing frequently on the streets of the town and so I take photos of him when I find him... In this photo he is telling a story about his performance as a musician the night before in a bar local... And he does it amidst laughter and loudly!... :))
A mi amigo Porte ya le conocen, últimamente ha estado apareciendo con frecuencia en las calles del pueblo y entonces le hago fotos cuando lo encuentro... En esta foto él está narrando una historia acera de su actuación como músico la noche previa en un bar local... ¡Y lo hace en medio de carcajadas y a voz en cuello!... :))
"Jesús, Antonio's nephew"/"Jesús, el sobrino de Antonio"
Jesús is a former student on my mother's class (she is a retired teacher) and is now a young man with two degrees, speaks several languages and is the secretary of the local Chronicler's Office (his uncle Antonio, who is also the president of the state's association of chroniclers and historians).... To listen to Jesús speak is to immerse oneself in a different dimension of an uncommon youth full of a kindness and intellectuality that is rare, at least here nowadays... When I took this photo of him I told him: "When you become a big shot like your uncle, I'll have this photo of you when you were still a youngster"... .
Jesús es un ex-alumno de mi madre (quien es maestra retirada) y hoy por hoy es un joven con dos titularidades, habla varios idiomas y se desempeña como secretario de la Oficina del Cronista local (su tío Antonio, quien a su vez es el presidente de la asociación de cronistas e historiadores del estado)... Escuchar hablar a Jesús es sumergirse en una dimensión distinta de una infrecuente juventud repleta de bonhomía e intelectualidad poco comunes, cuando menos aquí actualmente... Cuando le hice esta foto le dije: "Cuando seas todo un personaje como tu tío, yo tendré esta foto de ti siendo un jovenzuelo aún"...
"Juan's gaze"/"La mirada de Juan"
I don't think I'll have to introduce Juan to those who follow my blog!... Since I found out his name he usually appears to me several times a week in the streets... It seems like magic, but that's the way this town is!... The best thing about Juan is his pure and noble gaze... Juan has the soul of a child...
¡Creo que a quienes siguen mi blog no tendré que presentarles a Juan!... Desde que averigüé su nombre suele aparecerme varias veces por semana en las calles... ¡Parecen cosas mágicas, pero así es este pueblo!... Lo mejor de Juan es su mirada pura y noble... Juan tiene el alma de un niño...
"Dacio, the deacon"/"Dacio, el diacono"
Dacio is a good friend, a noble man and actually committed to doing part of the work of the local church by bringing comfort to the elderly, the sick and the homebound... I met Dacio as the driver of the ambulance of a local company which I used to visit because it was associated with the company where I worked...
Dacio es un buen amigo, un hombre noble y actualmente comprometido con hacer parte del trabajo de la Iglesia local llevando consuelo a las personas ancianas, enfermos y a quienes no pueden salir de sus casas... Conocí a Dacio siendo el conductor de la ambulancia de una empresa local la cual yo solía visitar por ser asociada a la empresa en donde yo trabajaba...
"New modelling agency"/"Nueva agencia de modelos"
From left to right: "Martín, Oscar and Alfonso"... The day I took this picture I shouted from afar: "Hey, have you opened a new modelling academy there?.... :))) hahaha... They're all so ugly that I couldn't think of any other way to joke with them!.... However, Martin managed to answer me: "Yes!... Come and join, we still have a place!" hahaha :))
De izquierda a derecha: "Martín, Oscar y Alfonso"... El día que hice esta foto les grité de lejos: "Hey, ¿Acaso han abierto una nueva academia de modelaje allí?... :)) hahaha... ¡Están todos tan feos que no se me ocurrió otra forma de bromearles!... Sin embargo, Martín atinó a contestarme: "¡Sí!... ¡Ven y únete que aún tenemos un cupo!" hahaha :))
"Gabriel strangely moody"/"Gabriel extrañamente malhumorado"
Usually my friend Gabriel (the best shoemaker in the village by the way) is in a good mood... But the day I took this picture of him, it was hot as hell and he was sitting there in a little shade in the street which was boiling at 38°C... So he was not in a good mood that day and his face confirms it!....
Generalmente mi amigo Gabriel (el mejor zapatero del pueblo por cierto) está de buen humor... Pero el día que le hice esta foto hacía un calor infernal y el estaba allí sentado en una pequeña sombra en la calle que hervía a unos 38°C... ¡Así que ese día no estaba de buen humor y su rostro así lo confirma!...
"Ramón arriving at the town"/"Ramón llegando al pueblo"
And many of you must surely know Ramón too!... And that's Ramón's face when he arrives in the village after coming down a long way from his beloved mountains! :)... But behind that hard face and his rustic complexion, there is a frank, kind, good-hearted person, loved by everyone in the village.... It is enough just to hear him speak to understand what a good soul he has!...
¡Y a Ramón también muchos de ustedes han de conocerle seguramente!... ¡Y ese es la cara de Ramón cuando llega al pueblo después de descender un largo camino desde sus amadas montañas! :)... Pero detrás de ese rostro duro y de su complexión rustica, hay una persona franca, amable, de buen corazón y querido por todos en el pueblo... ¡Basta no más escucharlo hablar para comprender cuan buena alma él tiene!...

ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL NOTE: Photographs captured with my Nikon D7000 DSLR camera in RAW format, then processed in Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments regarding light, sharpening, contrast and depth... They were then exported to JGP format on which minor modifications such as straightening and adding watermarks were carried out using PhotoScape 3.6.3.
NOTA TÉCNICA ADICIONAL: Fotografias capturadas con mi cámara DSLR Nikon D7000 en formato RAW, procesadas posteriormente en Adobe Camera RAW para ajustes relativos a luz, afilado, contraste y profundidad... Luego fueron exportadas a formato JGP sobre el cual se llevaron a cabo modificaciones menores como enderezado y agregado de marcas de agua usando PhotoScape 3.6.3.
