Today I want to share the story of a man whose name I should not reveal. Sadly he is one more among the many elderly people in Cuba who are trying to survive in whatever way they can and not in the way they would wish. Instead of enjoying a peaceful retirement he spends his days and even his nights cleaning used and discarded containers to give them a new life.
Behind the appearance of collecting material for recycling the reality is different. The containers that remain in better condition and look acceptable are eventually refilled and sold again as if they were original products. Water bottles and all kinds of beverages return to the shelves of some stores ready to begin a new cycle.
He himself told me that he is not proud of what he does. He made that clear. But it is necessary to reach the end of the month with some dignity if such a thing is still possible. Even so he showed a certain pride when he found a very expensive bottle of rum in excellent condition confident that this one would earn him a little more.
The story of this man repeats itself time and time again. The reality is harsh but it is ours. And as photographers we have the responsibility to face it record it with respect and try to make our work leave some kind of mark.

Hoy quiero compartirles la historia de un señor cuyo nombre no debo revelar. Lamentablemente es uno más entre tantos ancianos que en la Cuba de hoy están buscando la vida como pueden y no como quisieran. En lugar de disfrutar una jubilación tranquila pasa los dÃas y también las noches limpiando envases usados y desechados para darles una nueva vida.
Bajo la apariencia de recoger materia prima la realidad es otra. Los envases que quedan en mejor estado y resultan estéticamente aceptables terminan siendo rellenados para volver a venderse como si fueran productos originales. Botellas de agua y todo tipo de bebidas regresan a los estantes de algunas tiendas listas para iniciar un nuevo ciclo.
Él mismo me confesó que no se siente orgulloso de lo que hace. Lo dejó claro. Pero es necesario para poder llegar a fin de mes con algo de dignidad si es que eso aún es posible. Aun asà mostraba con cierto orgullo una botella de ron muy caro que habÃa encontrado en excelentes condiciones seguro de que por esa le darÃan un poco más.
La historia de este señor se repite una y otra vez. La realidad es dura pero es la nuestra. Y como fotógrafos tenemos la responsabilidad de mirarla de frente registrarla con respeto y luchar para que nuestro trabajo deje alguna huella.
