I always use studio flashes with hard directional light.
To use the exact photo-terms, softbox with honeycomb grid light modifier ;)
Contrejour position from above or sideway light works well, I move the light source during the shoot to add more randomness :)

    Yes, there definitely needs a hard directional light. I don't have such flashes... we'll have to go to the barn in sunny weather. It's dark there, but "hard directional light" comes through the cracks in the boards

      This is an excellent device for receiving directional hard light. Thanks for the hint, I will definitely repeat your trick :)
