I always use studio flashes with hard directional light.
To use the exact photo-terms, softbox with honeycomb grid light modifier ;)
Contrejour position from above or sideway light works well, I move the light source during the shoot to add more randomness :)

Yes, there definitely needs a hard directional light. I don't have such flashes... we'll have to go to the barn in sunny weather. It's dark there, but "hard directional light" comes through the cracks in the boards
