"Every year from March to May, Bangladesh receives 40 thunderstorms per square kilometer The media reports the deaths of about 150 people a year, but in reality the number is between 500 and 1,000.
What do the statistics say?
Lightning has killed about 2,446 people in nine years, from 2011 to 2020. The average number is more than 260 people per year. Of these, 2016 saw a maximum of 350 deaths. The number of deaths has been above 200 every year since 2012. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, two organizations conducting research on lightning (Disaster Forum and Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum) and the National Daily have matched the death toll.
