The phrase “let's just go with the flow” is particularly common in intimate relationship conversations, but sometimes, it's applicable to general life events.
Although, I believe it is often framed as “leaving things to chance” in this case.
Nonetheless, both scenarios involve an avoidance of taking much-necessary action.
In relationships, when we want to avoid commitments such as staying faithful and being emotionally available to one person, we offer up the idea of not putting labels on things and simply going with the flow.
In life, generally, when we are incapable of taking charge of circumstances we find ourselves, we tend to check out and embrace inaction, leaving everything to chance.
“Maybe not all, but some of it.”
It is cowardice to live life going with the flow or leaving things to chance.
Maybe not all, but some, if not most things in our lives require taking action to control.
The idea that embracing randomness has led many to situations of great demerits.
People tend to not understand that inaction in itself is a form of action. As a result, when we embrace going with the flow, we essentially decide that the worst move on the list of things to do, was what we were comfortable choosing.
Some have grown to believe that individual life is preprogrammed so there's really no point in trying.
A careful look at everything around us would expose that while general life (the universe) has in fact, established rules governing it, there are lots of flexibilities within (individual lives) that everyone can capitalize on.
Just as blockchains with smart contracts enable builders to flexibly build products and services for varying use cases, general life (the universe) has given autonomy to individuals to explore.
By choosing not to take action and write the program the way you want, you give up your autonomy and everyone else can, from this point, control or use you, directly or indirectly.
For instance, one may have wanted to build a business, but gave up along the way. From this point, he rolls back into the system of being an employee, instead of an employer, as a business owner.
Going with the flow or leaving things to chance isn't something we should consciously choose. There's beauty and fulfillment in taking control and directing your life to be as you want.
It is difficult but can be done. One just needs to be ready to travel the path.

“You just need to be ready to go down this path.” What gives you this readiness? How do you take the first step against the tide?
I think it's a no brainer decision when one is able to sit and weigh the cost of doing otherwise.
It is often right there, staring us in the face.
If you close your eyes, you cannot effectively navigate your environment and the risk of getting harmed significantly increases. That knowledge of the risks is all one needs to be ready, willing to open their eyes, because while you can still get harmed with your eyes open, it is a more controlled scenario with much lower risk factor.
