On this day, August 25, 1898, Heraklion was shocked by one of the biggest massacres in its history. This day brought almost immediate effects on the political history of Crete island.
This massacre was carried out by the Muslims of the city, under the tolerance of the local Muslim authorities, at the expense of numerous Christian civilians who lost their lives, their loved ones and their houses.

Among the hundreds of dead in the massacre were 18 English soldiers, as well as the Heraklion vice-consul of the British in Heraklion, Lysimachus Kalokairinos.
Unprecedented disasters accompanied the great massacre, houses, shops and other properties of the Christians of the city were given over to the flames and looting.

This is where the street got its name. The street was known in the past as Ruga Maistra (during the Venetian Time) or as Street of Delusion due to the many neoclassical buildings on both the sides, which had no similarities with the very poor low houses located in other parts of the city.

Today is also the celebration of Saint Titus, a church that was destroyed many times during earthquakes, fires, wars etc.
