A while back I was talking to some friends who want to relocate to somewhere in Asia. I like the idea of them doing this and it would be an awesome reason to take another trip somewhere again. But to think of the idea on actually doing this? Ow mennn, I would see so many challenges.
In the Netherlands you have this program about Dutchies moving to different countries and starting a business there locally. Very often they have no experience in this sector, are not fluent in the language (or don't even speak it at all), and start with totally unrealistic expectations because they ‘want to escape ‘the ratrace’. Awesome television, not always a successful business story.
The idea of how I see a small hotel or homestay is that it should not be too big. It should be seconden but not entirely secluded. You want people to stay for more than a night and that means you have to offer them a reason to stay. That means a restaurant and also either some beach or mountains or something with nature thst you don't have to care about.
Doing everything by yourself means no chill at all. But already have a kitchen and a restaurant means additional staff and more staff means more headache. And the more secluded you are, how are you going to distribute the products you need to your place. Did I already mention that a lot of tourists are super annoying and can be extremely rude? Not always the people who you want to hang out with….
I also was in a hotel recently that was absolutely fabulous, but it was burned down in the reviews by a Youtuber. That was already years ago and still people were review bombing the place to zero. That is how fragile your business can be. A couple of angry people with a jetlag and a hangover and your business is done. A business isnt pizza, it can't make everybody happy...
I don't know what I would do in the case of my friends. I do know… Something like that aint for me at all.

I think too many people over fantasise about moving and living in a new country just because they had a brilliant holiday there, or because they're pissed off with the situation at home. Nowhere is perfect in this world and once they settle down in their new fantasy country they get shocked again
Exactly this. Ive lived in a couple countries now for a couple of years and they all had their pros and cons.
One thing I did know there... it was really helpfull having a steady job. For the language, for the getting to know people. Starting a business of my own somewhere else would have been so challenging.
But indeed...idealizing is unrealistic. Although for a lot of people it would be could to get out of their habit for a while and see that the world had more options haha.
I know the UK has a show like that as well right?
