Quick step by step mixing tutorial part 6

in GEMS5 years ago

Following my last post today I'm going about how I EQ bass guitar. As I told before the idea is too have a balanced low-end and high-end and scooped mid. Every guitar and every rig is different so you gotta adjust your EQ moves to that. Simply laying my moves on your sound won't do you any good unless you have the exact rig as mine. 20200425222820.jpg
My first move is cutting 1.5k-ish considerably because that region is very sensitive to our ears and very audible through the mix. Overall it's a very annoying region for distorted bass. Second move is to cutting muddy and boxy frequencies of 200 to 300 Hz. I set mine on 200 Hz because I found it more problematic. Notice how the q is pretty wide. Then I boostd some sub harmonics around 50 to 60 Hz for more deep bass but not too much or it will overshadow the kick drum. A little boost around 700 Hz which has a very subtle effect. Boosting some 4 to 5 k-ish region for more cut and edge. Q here is narrow because I don't want the other regions be boosted simultaneously. And finally a low-pass filter on 9 k to get rid of unwanted very high frequencies.

Another processor in the chain is multi-band equalizer which will give more definition and punch to the low end. Without that low end is not well pronounced. I'm using Fabfilter pro-MB 20200425222943.jpg
The idea here is to, instead of cutting fundamental frequencies, keep them under control with compression. Usually 5 dBs of reduction is desirable. Set attack and release to fastest. Set range to -6 and compress 50 to 60, 100 and 800 Hz then just give more output to 100 Hz because we want more of that in the mix. Remember always check your moves with another equalizer on master bus for example to have a visualization of them. And more importantly trust your ears more than your eyes. Visualizing is a tool to help you hear better.
