When we think in the sea, it is inevitable to wonder about the strange creatures that might still exist in its remote and inaccessible depths.
Aunque, debemos admitir que dicha incógnita ya se ha paseado antes por la mente de muchas personas a lo largo de la historia.
Although, we must admit that such a question has crossed the minds of many people throughout history.
Pero, un número bastante reducido de ellas han tenido la dicha (o en muchos casos la mala suerte) de toparse cara a cara con seres marinos bastante fuera de lo común.
But, a rather small number of them have had the good fortune (or in many cases the bad luck) to come face to face with rather unusual sea creatures.
Recordemos por breves instantes las historias de los antiguos marineros, las cuales por lo general suelen estar plagadas de criaturas monstruosas, tales como el temible Kraken o las legendarias serpientes marinas.
Let us briefly recall the stories of ancient sailors, which are usually plagued by monstrous creatures, such as the fearsome Kraken or the legendary sea serpents.
Pero lo cierto es que, más allá de contener monstruos cuyo pasatiempo parece consistir en la destrucción de embarcaciones, y comer personas cual golosinas exóticas, es bastante probable que las extensas áreas acuáticas del mundo alberguen otros desconcertantes misterios.
But the truth is that, beyond containing monsters whose hobbies seem to consist of destroying ships and eating people like exotic treats, it is quite likely that the vast aquatic areas of the world harbor other puzzling mysteries.
En relación a ello, hoy les presentaré algunas de las leyendas más extrañas en cuanto seres marinos, que por más absurdas que nos pueda llegar a parecer, lograron cautivar las mentes de los más famosos investigadores.
In this regard, today I will present some of the strangest legends about sea creatures, which, however absurd they may seem to us, managed to captivate the minds of the most famous researchers.
El monje marino de Dinamarca

Todo comenzó cuando los habitantes de Dinamarca se toparon con una extraña criatura en las costas de ese país.
It all started when the inhabitants of Denmark came across a strange creature off the coast of that country.
Según se dice el hecho en cuestión tuvo lugar en algún momento del año 1546, y la forma de vida encontrada fue descrita de una forma bastante peculiar e insólita.
The event in question is said to have taken place sometime in the year 1546, and the life form found was described in a rather peculiar and unusual way.
Los testigos presenciales dijeron que tal vez se trataba de una especie de pescado, debido a que el ser tenía unas aletas y hasta una cola ancha.
Eyewitnesses said that it may have been some kind of fish, due to the fact that the creature had fins and even a wide tail.
Pero, lo más raro e inquietante era su forma, la cual de una vez asociaron con la de un monje católico.
But, the strangest and most disturbing thing was its shape, which was once associated with that of a Catholic monk.
Así es. Estas personas dijeron haber visto una criatura marina de casi tres metros de largo que les recordaba a uno de estos siervos de Dios, porque el pez tenía una cabeza rapada y también parecía estar ataviado con una vestimenta muy similar a la de los monjes.
That's right. These people said they saw a sea creature almost three meters long that reminded them of one of these servants of God, because the fish had a shaved head and also seemed to be dressed in a garment very similar to that of the monks.
Esto es algo bastante absurdo por donde se mire, pero aún así no se puede negar lo curioso que resulta ser el hecho de imaginarnos a un pez vestido a la usanza de los monjes.
This is rather absurd by any standards, but even so, there is no denying how curious it is to imagine a fish dressed in monk's clothing.
Aquel estrambótico relato muy probablemente sería considerado como una “tomadura de pelo” en nuestra época.
That outlandish story would most likely be considered a "hoax" in our time.
Pero en los tiempos antiguos logró conmocionar a muchas personas, más que todo por su aparente relación directa con la religión predominante en aquellos días.
But in ancient times it managed to shock many people, mostly because of its apparent direct relationship with the predominant religion of those days.
Por otro lado, quienes lo habían descubierto no se explicaban como era posible la existencia de un pez de tales características, pues conocían muy bien la fauna marina de su país.
On the other hand, those who had discovered it could not explain how it was possible the existence of a fish with such characteristics, since they knew very well the marine fauna of their country.
En este mismo orden de ideas, realmente debió haber sido muy interesante ver las caras de asombro de los curtidos marineros y pescadores experimentados al ver a la susodicha criatura.
In the same vein, it must have been very interesting to see the astonished faces of the seasoned sailors and experienced fishermen when they saw the creature.
Sin embargo, este no fue el único caso de peces con apariencia de monje encontrados en la superficie, pues se tiene registro de otros especímenes.
However, this was not the only case of monk-like fish found on the surface, as other specimens have been recorded.
Los monjes marinos de Escocia y Polonia

Cuatro años más tarde sería encontrado otro de estos organismos en tierras escocesas, y mucho tiempo después uno muy parecido en territorio polaco.
Four years later, another of these organisms was found in Scotland, and much later a very similar one was found in Poland.
Ambos casos llegaron a nosotros gracias al incansable trabajo investigativo de un tal Conrad Gessner, quien fuera en su momento un reconocido naturalista y bibliógrafo de origen suizo.
Both cases came to us thanks to the tireless investigative work of a certain Conrad Gessner, who was at the time a renowned naturalist and bibliographer of Swiss origin.
Gracias a ello, el para entonces llamado “monje de mar” pasó a formar parte del extenso catálogo de seres extraños descubiertos por el hombre.
Thanks to this, the then called "sea monk" became part of the extensive catalog of strange beings discovered by man.

No obstante, parece ser que en los mares del mundo hay otras criaturas esparciendo la palabra de Dios entre los peces, pues aparte de los mencionados monjes marinos se dice que también existen los “obispos del mar”.
However, it seems that in the seas of the world there are other creatures spreading the word of God among the fish, for apart from the aforementioned sea monks, it is said that there are also "bishops of the sea".
Aquí la cosa se pone todavía más extraña.
Here things get even stranger.
Resulta que los polacos no se impresionaron tanto con el espécimen de monje de mar avistado en sus costas, pues ya se tenían noticias por aquellos lares de este tipo de criaturas desde hace mucho tiempo atrás.
It turns out that the Poles were not so impressed with the sea monk specimen sighted on their shores, as they had already been aware of this type of creature for a long time.
Hay una leyenda cuyo origen parece remontarse al siglo XIII, donde se narra la historia de unos intrépidos pescadores que logran sacar del mar a un ser muy extraño, tras lo cual decidieron llevarlo directamente a palacio.
There is a legend that seems to date back to the thirteenth century, which tells the story of intrepid fishermen who managed to pull out of the sea a very strange being, after which they decided to take him directly to the palace.
Allí lo presentaron ante la mirada atónita del por aquel entonces soberano de Polonia, quién les hizo saber su deseo de conservar a la criatura.
There he was presented before the astonished gaze of the then ruler of Poland, who let them know his desire to keep the child.
Sin embargo, no pasó mucho tiempo hasta que el supuesto pez religioso diera las primeras señales de querer regresar al océano. Por ello el monarca no tuvo más opción que dejarlo en libertad.
However, it was not long before the supposedly religious fish showed the first signs of wanting to return to the ocean. Therefore, the monarch had no choice but to release it.
Entonces, ocurrió algo bastante curioso e insólito.
Then, something rather curious and unusual happened.
Se dice que justo al momento de ser liberado el obispo de mar efectuó ante los asombrados testigos la señal de la cruz, para luego desaparecer bajo las aguas del mar.
It is said that just at the moment of his release, the sea bishop made the sign of the cross before the astonished witnesses, and then disappeared under the waters of the sea.

Otro relato similar al previamente descrito se cuenta en Alemania, siendo más interesante todavía pues el mismo habla de uno de estos peces extraños que logró ser capturado exitosamente. Pero cuya vida en cautiverio no logró superar los tres días.
Another story similar to the one described above is told in Germany, and it is even more interesting because it tells of one of these strange fish that was successfully captured. But whose life in captivity did not exceed three days.
Finalmente, ningún reportaje sobre los enigmáticos clérigos del mar estaría completo sin hacer mención al pez obispo de Orforde.
Finally, no report on the enigmatic clerics of the sea would be complete without mentioning the bishop fish of Orforde.
Este logró vivir hasta 6 meses en un castillo de la localidad, siendo alimentado todos los dias con una amplia variedad de alimentos, incluyendo pescado fresco.

Sobre esta misma criatura se cuenta que era constantemente llevada a la iglesia, donde se esperaba que realizara algún acto relacionado a la adoración al señor.
It is said that this same creature was constantly taken to church, where it was expected to perform some act related to the worship of the Lord.
Pero, al parecer el pez obispo se mantuvo siempre reacio a ser participe de tales menesteres…
But, it seems that the fish bishop was always reluctant to be involved in such matters...
La historia finaliza con el pez obispo de Orforde escapando hacia el mar, dejando tras de sí una estela de misterio, junto a muchas preguntas sin respuesta.
The story ends with the bishop fish of Orforde escaping into the sea, leaving behind a trail of mystery, along with many unanswered questions.

Se cree que los japoneses de antaño también se habrían topado con los escurridizos clérigos del mar. Muestra de ello serían las leyendas relacionadas a los “Umibozu”.
It is believed that the Japanese of yesteryear also encountered the elusive sea clerics. This is evidenced by the legends related to the "Umibozu".
Sobre estás aterradoras criaturas legendarias se cuenta que eran el resultado de la muerte por ahogamiento de un sacerdote.
It is said that these terrifying legendary creatures were the result of the drowning death of a priest.
De alguna forma, las almas en pena de estos infortunados religiosos pasaba por un proceso de adaptación a las condiciones de vida subacuática, dando origen a la aterradora leyenda.
Somehow, the souls in pain of these unfortunate religious went through a process of adaptation to the conditions of underwater life, giving rise to the terrifying legend.
La descripción de los Umibozu del folclore japonés coincide bastante con la de los monjes de mar europeos, por lo que es fácil llegar a la conclusión de que ambas leyendas se refieren a una misma criatura.
The description of the Umibozu from Japanese folklore coincides quite closely with that of the European sea monks, so it is easy to conclude that both legends refer to the same creature.
Lo mismo ocurre con Los Bonzos Marinos de China, unas criaturas muy peligrosas que supuestamente abundaban en los mares y que tenían por costumbre atacar a los marineros.
The same is true of China's Sea Bonzos, very dangerous creatures that supposedly abounded in the seas and were in the habit of attacking sailors.

Ante tales relatos tan raros y evidentemente repletos de superstición religiosa, diversos investigadores buscaron la manera de obtener una explicación más cercana a la realidad.

Quién la propuso fue un sujeto llamado Japetus Steenstrup, un conocido zoólogo se origen danés.
It was proposed by Japetus Steenstrup, a well-known zoologist of Danish origin.
Él decía que el manto de los calamares gigantes tienen una característica muy particular, lo que bien pudo hacer que esta fuese confundida con la cabeza rapada de los monjes católicos.
He said that the mantle of the giant squid has a very particular characteristic, which may well have caused it to be mistaken for the shaved head of the Catholic monks.
Algo parecido pudo haber ocurrido con los tentáculos y la cola de estos enormes especímenes, al ser confundidos con brazos y piernas humanas respectivamente.
Something similar may have happened with the tentacles and tail of these huge specimens, being mistaken for human arms and legs respectively.
Esta teoría resulta interesante, pues se sabe que los calamares gigantes no acostumbran nadar en la superficie.

Todo lo anterior contribuye a reforzar la idea de que eran muy poco conocidos por los europeos, y más aún por las culturas asiáticas.

Una de las explicaciones más polémicas a los avistamientos de clérigos marinos registrados fue propuesta por Bernard Heuvelmans, mejor conocido en la actualidad por ser el padre fundador de la criptozoologia.
One of the most controversial explanations for recorded marine cleric sightings was proposed by Bernard Heuvelmans, best known today as the founding father of cryptozoology.
Según él, la cosa se limitaba a que la gente identificaba mal a las morsas.
According to him, the issue was limited to people misidentifying walruses.
Pero, esta es quizás una explicación poco creíble, pues no toma en cuenta que los pescadores y habitantes de las costas suelen estar muy familiarizados con los animales que habitan a su alrededor.
But, this is perhaps not a very credible explanation, as it does not take into account that fishermen and coastal dwellers are usually very familiar with the animals that live around them.

En ultima instancia, otra de las posibles explicaciones bien podría ser la existencia de los Jenny Hannivers, que no eran otra cosa más que mantarrayas o calamares sometidos a un proceso de petrificación, modificación y barnizado.
Ultimately, another possible explanation could well be the existence of the Jenny Hannivers, which were nothing more than manta rays or squid subjected to a process of petrification, modification and varnishing.
Esto se hacia siempre con la idea de producir esperpentos que luego podrían ser vendidos como seres mitológicos, tales como dragones, sirenas y basiliscos disecados.
This was always done with the idea of producing sperpentos that could then be sold as mythological beings, such as dragons, mermaids and stuffed basilisks.
Hasta donde se sabe, esta clase de macabros suvenires eran muy solicitados en Europa y Asia durante las épocas pasadas, pues se les consideraba la evidencia de que existían tales seres.
As far as is known, this kind of macabre souvenirs were in great demand in Europe and Asia in the past, as they were considered evidence that such beings existed.
Este negocio se mantuvo a flote durante mucho tiempo. Al menos hasta la llegada de su debacle, logró demostrase que eran una completa estafa.
This business stayed afloat for a long time. At least until the advent of their debacle, they managed to prove that they were a complete scam.

Es muy probable que efectivamente se tratasen de calamares mal identificados.
It is very likely that they were indeed misidentified squid.
Pero, al mismo tiempo, también podrían tratarse de organismos desconocidos. Criaturas que moraron en los mares hasta su eventual desaparición, tiempo después de haber sido avistados de manera accidental.
But, at the same time, they could also be unknown organisms. Creatures that dwelled in the seas until their eventual disappearance, some time after they were accidentally sighted.
Esto último explicaría el por qué no se han encontrado especímenes en nuestros días.
The latter would explain why no specimens have been found in our days.
Pero, hayan existido tales criaturas o no, igual vale la pena preguntarse si los clérigos del mar todavía siguen surcando las aguas…
But, whether such creatures existed or not, it is still worth asking whether sea clerics still ply the waters...
Hasta que por fin llegue el día en que emerjan de nuevo en las redes de algún pescador y, tras sorprenderlo, hacer la señal de la cruz, para luego desaparecer nuevamente bajo las profundas y oscuras aguas del océano.
Until the day finally comes when they emerge again in the nets of some fisherman and, after surprising him, make the sign of the cross, and then disappear again under the deep, dark waters of the ocean.
