Just woke up to the news that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died. Sitting here in stunned disbelief as I'd had no idea she was so ill. We've all heard about her brave battle with cancer and along with others, I'd assumed she'd retire after the new President was sworn in. But that's all over now and things are about to get strange.
Here's what will likely happen.
As announced, they'll try to ram somebody through to tilt the balance even more in favor of the conservative majority. One can't help but be reminded of how they dragged out President Obama's nominee and can't believe they will expect special treatment this time around. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, you have to respect the principled life she led. I'd like to think that even those who opposed her would have the common decency to demand that any pick must wait until the next President is sworn in as we've always done in the past. As well as choosing someone that actually deserves to be a supreme court justice.
The last thing America needs is another Brett Kavanaugh.
It would be an absolute travesty to throw yet another unqualified nominee in there just to secure an ideological majority. Yet it looks like we're about to head down that very road at a time when we need the best and the brightest to sit on the highest court in the land. I don't know what else to say as I'm still in shock. But her passing could not have happened at a worse time. Somebody will see this a surprise gift to be used in the basest of ways. Every time we think he will rise to the occasion and respect the office, we're proven wrong time and time again. Wouldn't it be nice to be pleasantly surprised this one time?
