No les había contado, pero hace 8 meses atrás me detectaron dos quistes tiroideos, por razones económicas y las inherentes a la cuarentena, no había podido asistir a una consulta con un especialista. Recientemente, una gran amiga que emigro de Venezuela y actualmente se encuentra viviendo en España, se enteró del diagnóstico. Sin pedírselo, me envió el dinero para cancelar la consulta, así que, al fin el pasado día lunes logre asistir a una consulta con una endocrinóloga. No tengo palabras para expresar el agradecimiento para con mi querida amiga Zulirais García.
I hadn't told them, but 8 months ago I was detected with two thyroid cysts, for economic reasons and those inherent in quarantine, I had not been able to attend a consultation with a specialist. Recently, a great friend who emigrated from Venezuela and is currently living in Spain, found out about the diagnosis. Without asking her, she sent me the money to cancel the consultation, so I finally managed to attend a consultation with an endocrinologist last Monday. I have no words to express my gratitude to my dear friend Zulirais Garcia.
Bueno, la médico especialista en endocrinología, al ver el informe médico del Ecosonograma Tiroideo, así como las imágenes y realizarme la revisión correspondiente, diagnostico lo que me temía. Debo someterme a una intervención quirúrgica para extraer los tumores, ya que son muy grandes, pero, antes de preocuparme por la cirugía, tengo otra cosa por la cual preocuparme. Resulta, que antes de la cirugía deben realizarme un estudio muy costoso, para determinar si son malignos o los dos nódulos que tengo en la tiroides.
Well, the endocrinology doctor, on seeing the medical report of the Thyroid Ecosonogram, as well as the images and having the corresponding review done, diagnosed what I was afraid of. I have to undergo surgery to remove the tumors, since they are very large, but before I worry about surgery, I have something else to worry about. As it turns out, before the surgery I have to undergo a very expensive study, to determine whether they are malignant or the two nodules I have in my thyroid.
Les confieso, que estoy literalmente aterrada, por toda la situación, sobre todo, porque mi mamá actualmente se encuentra batallando con un cáncer de útero. Me preocupan sobretodo mis hijas, son muy pequeñas aun y me necesitan mucho. Pero confío sobre todas las cosas en Dios y en que lograré reunir el dinero necesario para realizarme el estudio y que todo estará bien.
I confess that I am literally terrified by the whole situation, especially since my mom is currently battling uterine cancer. I am especially worried about my daughters, they are still very young and they need me a lot. But I trust in God above all things and that I will manage to gather the necessary money to have the study done and that everything will be fine.
Este procedimiento al que debo someterme se denomina PAAF de tiroides (Punción de nódulos tiroideos). Como pueden ver en la imagen anterior, el procedimiento básicamente consiste en introducir una aguja en cada nódulo, con el objetivo de aspirar tejido. El material extraído posteriormente será analizado, para determinar, la probabilidad de que sea maligno o no, los nódulos que tengo en mi tiroides.
This procedure that I have to undergo is called a Thyroid FAP (Thyroid Nodule Puncture). As you can see in the image above, the procedure basically consists of inserting a needle into each nodule, in order to aspirate tissue. The material extracted will later be analyzed to determine the probability of the nodules in my thyroid being malignant or not.
Sin ese examen, no me podrán hacer la cirugía para extraer los nódulos, el problema es que, como ya les comente, aquí en Venezuela ese estudio es muy costoso, al menos para mis ingresos económicos. La punción de un solo nódulo, como se detalla en la siguiente imagen tiene un costo de 190$ lo que ya es demasiado dinero, para mi sueldo como docente universitaria. Sin contar que son dos nódulos a los que hay que realizarle el procedimiento.
Without that examination, I will not be able to have the surgery to remove the nodules, the problem is that, as I have already told you, here in Venezuela that study is very expensive, at least for my economic income. The puncture of a single nodule, as detailed in the following image, costs $190, which is already too much money for my salary as a university professor. Not to mention that there are two nodules to be punctured.
La imagen anterior corresponde al presupuesto emitido por “La Unidad de Mastología y Atención Integral a la Mujer”, y como pueden detallar el costo del estudio para un solo nódulo es de 190$, que se distribuyen de la siguiente forma:
- Honorarios médicos (por cada nódulo) ------> 100 $
- Utilización del equipo de ecosonograma -----> 10 $
- Muestra Patológica (por cada nódulo) ----------> 80 $
Pero, como en mi caso son dos nódulos, la situación se complica más, el costo prácticamente se duplica, por lo que el estudio en los dos nódulos tiene el costo total de 370$.
The above image corresponds to the budget issued by "La Unidad de Mastología y Atención Integral a la Mujer", and as you can detail the cost of the study for a single nodule is $190, which is distributed as follows
- Medical fees (for each nodule) --------------> 100 $
- Use of the echogram equipment --------------> 10 $
- Pathological sample (for each nodule) ------> 80 $
But, as in my case it is two nodules, the situation becomes more complicated, the cost practically doubles, so the study in the two nodules has the total cost of $370.
Esa cantidad de dinero, por muchísimo se escapa de nuestro presupuesto familiar, es por ello, pensando en mis hermosas hijas y haciendo a un lado mi vergüenza, decidí acudir a ustedes a través de esta publicación. Hoy escribí estas palabras y en ella coloco mis esperanzas…
