Hey Folks
So this is my first entry for HIVE open mic.
I was really excited to see that this weeks theme is song's of the sea.I cant help but wonder if I may have influenced that with my recent sea shanty sessions :)
I've been working on learning this song recently.I took a shot at recording it a couple of days ago but I didn't really have a feel for the song then and I still hadn't added the last verse.
The song is finished now and I feel much more comfortable singing it.
I have chosen this song as every time I sing it I cant help but see the events of the song play out in my mind.A fishing boat caught in a storm,men in yellow fishing jackets washed over board the raging sea swirling and smashing the boat on the rock's.
The song is called Donegal Danny and is based on true events.I am dedicating this one to Ronnie Drew ,founding member of the Irish folk group The Dubliner's.I first heard his version of the song and was instantly inspired to learn it.

One fateful night in the wind and the rain we set sail from Killybegs town
There were five of us from sweet Donegal and one from County Down
We were fishermen who worked the sea and never counted the cost
But I never thought when that night was done that my fine friends would all be lost

Then the storm it broke and drove the boat to the rocks about ten miles from shore
As we fought the tide we hoped inside to see our homes once more
Then we struck a rock and holed the bow and all of us knew that she'd go down
So we jumped right into the icy sea and prayed to God we wouldn't drown
But the raging sea was rising still as we struck out for the land
And she fought with all her cruelty to claim that gallant band
By St John's Point in the early dawn I dragged myself on the shore
And I cursed the sea for what she'd done and vowed to sail her never more

That awful night I lost all my friends I see their faces yet

Meaningful song, yeah, I can really feel the tragedy in it and the triumph. Ah, the ocean. So full of inspiration.
