There is no need to seek entertainment or sources for diversifying my attention as my orange cats seem to provide me with live entertainment daily. In a way they behave like small children with reverence to the adult or me in the house. They know what is good or bad manner; they would never jump onto the table to steal the grilled mackerel. But they would wait until the usual time around 4.30 pm; that’s when I would give them their grilled fish. They know that they would have the usual cat food in the morning.
All was peaceful until Joan called out “You! Fat Kwan! Fatty face!”
These orange cats are so simple in their wants and easy to please. I did tell them that time is tough and we couldn’t afford all the best things available in shops. I ever asked them to help finding income for feeding everyone in the house. That’s when Kwan, the younger cat, starting to bring ‘food’ such as bird, mice and lizard to my front door. I had to explain to her what I really meant. I said it would be fabulous if they discovered some treasure trove on our land.
“How dare you! Ugly Joan! You are jealous of my beauty!” “I’ll teach you some manner!”
Several years ago, one old lady spirit dressed in ancient costume told a farmer (in his dream) to dig in front of the cottage. She told them that she has been guarding some hidden gold jewelry for years and it’s almost time for her to be reincarnated. She told them to sell the gold to get some money so that they could perform a Buddhist ceremony for her smooth departure to next life. The whole village wished they had that lucky break one day. But I wonder whether my cats could sniff around for hidden treasures.
“Gosh! You have bad breath! Joan!”
This area used to be part of an old city during the time of very prosperous kingdom of Lanna almost eight hundreds years ago. We even found some old stones probably used for building the city wall or temple wall in our garden. I knew the land in this part of the country was very old with lots of magic and legends of the Water Dragons or Water Serpents. Several old villagers recalled seeing these Water Dragons during their childhood. I only saw them in my dreams. My gardener told me she saw the wet markings of the Water Serpent in my garden a few years ago but she dared not speak about it.
“Sorry! Forgot to brush my teeth this morning.” “This served you right. Haha.”
At least, my orange cats keep me company and guard the house against small snakes, scorpions
and field mice. I used to find dead giant scorpions on the driveway; and I had to rescue small snakes from my cats a few times. They also staged wrestling performance to cheer me up and to help me with my weekly post. They have in fact contributed towards the cost of the grilled mackerels! I have been hoping that they would bring back gold jewelry in their mouths, instead of bird or lizard, one day! But, if that actually one day, I would probably be freaked out and quite frightened of the repercussion. So, I’d rather have normal cats behaviour with good health and happy mood.
“Oh! No! I can’t breathe. Let’s have a break!”
เราไม่เคยเลี้ยงแมวเป็นเรื่องเป็นราวแบบนี้มาก่อน. พออยู่กับแมวส้มไปนานเข้า เราก็เริ่มเข้าใจแมวมากขึ้น และรับรู้ถึงความรู้สึกของแมวได้มากขึ้น แมวเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีมาก เพราะแมวมีความเกรงใจสูง มันจะไม่ค่อยกล้าทำเสียงดัง จนเราต้องบอกว่าอนุญาตให้ร้องเสียงดังได้ เวลาที่ต้องการออกไปที่สนามเพื่อไปห้องน้ำ เราชอบแมวตรงที่แมวมีมารยาทดีมาก มันจะไม่กระโดดขึ้นบนโต๊ะเพื่อมาขโมยกินปลาทูย่าง แต่แมวจะรู้เวลากินปลาย่างดีมาก พวกแมวจะมานั่งคอยเราและ เตือนเราว่าเกือบถึงเวลากินปลาย่างแล้ว เราดีใจที่แมวไม่เคยแย่งกันกินปลาย่าง พวกมันจะแบ่งกันกิน และดินอิ่มแล้วก็จะหยุดกินต่อ แมวไม่ตะกละตะกรามด้วย
Alas, peace has returned for a while!
เราชอบมากที่มีแมวอยู่ที่บ้าน พวกแมวช่วยไล่งูเขียวไปจากบริเวณบ้าน เราเคยเจอซากแมวป่องสีดำตัวยาวเกือบฟุตอยู่บนทางเดินสองตัวแล้ว และพวกแมวยังคอยจับหนูให้ด้วย แต่บางทีมันเอานกและกิ้งก่ามาที่บ้านด้วย เราก็ต้องอธิบายให้แมวรู้ว่า ไม่ควรไปล่าสัตว์ที่มีประโยชน์ ให้จับหนูและไล่พวกสัตว์มีพิษมีภัยก็พอแล้ว ดูเหมือนแมวจะเข้าใจดีมาก เราก็ดีใจที่แมวส้มมีมารยาทและนิสัยดีมาก เราก็หวังว่าพวกแมวจะอยู่ที่บ้านสวนอย่างมีความสุข และมีสุขภาพแข็งแรงตลอดไป เราจะได้มีแมวมาทำหน้าตลกๆ และเล่นมวยปล้ำให้เราดูเวลาเราอยากถ่ายรูปเล่น แมวก็ทำงานหาเลี้ยงชีพตามแบบฉบับของแมวส้มนั่นเอง
“Hey, when will we get our grilled fish?”
“Let’s take a nap, I am not hungry yet.”

I don't know why, but I've always been afraid of snakes. Apparently on a subconscious level. Even non-venomous snakes are not pleasant to me. Spiders also do not cause sympathy. How do you get along with them there? ... recently I watched a video of 6 people in Thailand fishing a huge python, 200 kg, out of a pond. The horror. .... I also wanted fried mackerel for the evening
Oh! Snakes can be quite a problem especially those big ones like cobras!! I think my cats chase all the snakes away whenever they spot them. I don’t hate snakes but I talk to them and ask them nicely to avoid our garden. We used to see big ones in the woods nearby .
My cousin is very afraid of snakes; she would scream whoever she saw pictures of snakes in magazines!! She was definitely frightened by adults’ stories about snakes. Having been in the countryside for some time, I am getting used to the big black scorpions; I would let them go free into the bush. I saw small snakes several times a year; but they are usually afraid of people and ran away fast!
We saw some bats at night too; they probably cane over from Laos. There are plenty of big pythons on the other side of the river!
Yes, we have to pay for everything! For the fact that you have summer all year round = a large variety of snakes and insects. I often go to the forest, sometimes fishing, but more often for wild mushrooms. We also have snakes. But only one is poisonous-a Viper, but it is not very large, up to 1 meter usually. And we don't have any poisonous insects at all.
