More than once we have all found ourselves in a situation where we need to solve a problem and we hesitate whether to solve it ourselves or pay someone else. There are several factors that determine what decision you make, but today I want you to look at it from a more analytical side so you can be more efficient.
Más de alguna vez todos nos hemos encontrado en una situación donde necesitamos resolver un problema y dudamos si lo resolvemos nosotros mismos o le pagamos a alguien más. Hay varios factores que determinan qué decisión tomas, pero hoy quiero que lo veas de un lado más analítico para que puedas ser más eficiente.
By being more efficient I mean that with less, time, money and/or effort you achieve the same or better result, the more efficient you are, the better. And well, as I said before, there are 3 things that go hand in hand with efficiency:
Money: what it costs in numerical value.
Time: how long it takes you to solve the problem.
Effort: the amount of energy we use to solve the problem.
Con ser más eficiente me refiero a que con menos, tiempo, dinero y/o esfuerzo logres el mismo o mejor resultado, mientras más eficiente seas, mejor. Y bien, como he dicho anteriormente, hay 3 cosas que van de la mano con la eficiencia:
Dinero: lo que cuesta en valor numérico.
Tiempo: lo que tardas en resolver el problema.
Esfuerzo: la cantidad de energía que empleamos para resolver el problema.
These 3 factors are finite, and therefore the lower the value of the 3 together, the more efficient you will be; that is, if you spend little money, almost no time and very little effort, you are being very efficient.
Estos 3 factores son finitos, y por lo tanto mientras menor sea el valor de los 3 juntos, más eficiente va a ser; osea, si gastas poco dinero, casi nada de tiempo y muy poco esfuerzo, estás siendo muy eficiente.
But, how do I know if it is little money, time, or effort that I am going to spend?
Pero, ¿Cómo saber si es poco dinero, tiempo, o esfuerzo el que voy a emplear?
The most logical thing to do is to see if you have already solved this problem before, or if someone else has solved it. Make a calculation of how long it would take you to do it according to your past experience or according to that of the person who has solved it.
Pues aquí es donde debes analizar bien, lo más lógico es ver si tu ya has resolvido este problema anteriormente, o si alguién más lo ha resuelto. Haz un cálculo de cuánto te tardarías haciéndolo según tu experiencia pasada o según la de la persona que lo ha resuelto.
Then calculate how much money and time it would take you to do it, and how much it would take the person you would pay to do it (experience plays a big role here). And then you should calculate how much money you make per hour and compare it to what it would cost you to do it yourself by adding your time value. If that sum is higher than what an expert will charge you, don't think twice, the other person will basically save you time and money; otherwise, you can decide whether to do it yourself in your free time, or if you want to take the risk because it is a problem you will be facing more often and therefore it is useful to have experience to become more efficient in solving it.
Luego calcula cuánto dinero y tiempo te llevaría hacerlo a ti, y cuánto le llevaría a la persona que le pagarías (la experiencia juega un gran rol aquí). Y luego debes calcular cuánto dinero haces tu por hora y compararlo con lo que te costaría hacerlo a ti sumando tu valor de tiempo. Si esa suma es más alta de lo que te va cobrar un experto, ni lo pienses dos veces, la otra persona te va ahorrar tiempo y dinero básicamente; de lo contrario, puedes decidir si lo haces tu en tu tiempo libre, o si deseas tomar el riesgo porque es un problema que vas a estar enfrentando más a menudo y por lo tanto te sirve tener experiencia para volverte más eficiente en resolverlo.
For example, it happened to me last week with one of those LED porthole bulbs. I thought it was fused and replaced it with a new one, when the new one didn't light I realized it was the transformer that was broken, so I went to amazon to see how much one cost and I saw it for a little less than 5 Euros, then I called an electrician to ask him how much he charged me to bring the transformer and replace it, and he told me that 50 Euros would do it all.

Practically, he was charging me to go with the car, buy the spare transformer, bring the tools that I already have at home and he would charge me 1 hour, which is the minimum he charges even if it takes less time because otherwise it is not profitable for him. Honestly, he was charging me very little, but if I had asked him to change 6 portholes, he would have charged me the same amount of time and only the extra for the transformers. So seeing that it would take me at most 15 minutes to order the transformer online and install it once I had it in my hands, I decided to do it myself.
Prácticamente, me estaba cobrando por ir con el coche, comprar el repuesto del transformador, llevar las herramientas que yo ya tengo en casa y me cobraría 1 hora, que es lo mínimo que cobra aunque tarde menos porque sino no es rentable para él. Sinceramente, me estaba cobrando poco, pero si le hubiera pedido que cambiara 6 ojos de buey, me hubiera cobrado la misma cantidad de tiempo y solo el extra de los transformadores. Así que al ver que a mi me tomaría como máximo 15 minutos en pedir el transformador por internet e instalarlo una vez ya lo tuviera en mis manos, decidí hacerlo yo mismo.
In the same way that I have been able to see if it was cost effective and efficient to pay someone else to do this job, you can analyze it when you have a problem to solve. Sure, every problem is different and some are more complex than others, but when it is obvious where it is more efficient, you will save time, money and energy for sure.
De la misma manera que yo he podido ver si era rentable y eficiente pagarle a alguien más por hacer este trabajo, tu puedes analizarlo cuando tengas algún problema que resolver. Claro, cada problema es distinto y unos son más complejos que otros, pero cuando sea obvio donde es más eficiente, te ahorrarás tiempo, dinero y energía seguro.
