How are you guys? I believe you are doing well. Yesterday, May 26th was a very important day for the Buddhists of the world. This is because the full moon Poya day of Vesak, which marked the birth, enlightenment and death of our religious leader Buddha, was in full swing. As the corona epidemic is spreading all over the world these days, we all had to celebrate this beautiful festival from home this year as well.
As a severe epidemic has spread around the world, we have to celebrate Vesak from home. On this beautiful day, I went back to my childhood. When we were little we used to enjoy watching Vesak pandals, light bulbs of different colors and Vesak lanterns of different shapes during the night. Because I could watch them in more colors that night. Funds raised from the small contributions of the people living in the rural areas were also used to make a program called 'Dansals' which cater to all people. But all that work was halted because the government imposed travel restrictions.
Despite all the obstacles, we had the opportunity to have a colorful Vesak night with many decorations from home.
With the imposition of travel restrictions, the demand for Vesak lanterns, Vesak buckets and light bulbs in the market decreased. Therefore, the vendors were not able to earn more revenue for all the Vesak items in the market this year. Vesak lanterns are on sale in the market as many people who lead a crowded life do not have the space to make a Vesak lantern at present. People living in urban areas hang Vesak lanterns from the market in their homes. But market demand has been low this year.
The Vesak Bucket is made of transparent wax and brings beauty to the night. Priced at around Rs. 10 in Sri Lankan currency, a candle can be inserted into a Vesak bucket and a beautiful light can be obtained at night. You can get an idea of it from some of the photos above.
The other thing that gives color to the night time on Vesak Poya day is the bulbs that glow in different colors. It's even nice to see how these bulbs glow when the power goes out. Young children in particular are more likely to enjoy watching them. As a result, bulbs can be seen hanging in almost every home.
The blue, white, yellow, red and orange Buddhist flags are displayed in almost every home on Vesak Poya day. Two Buddhist flags were also hung in our garden. Different meanings in these colors are mentioned in the Buddha's philosophy.
In yesterday's content, I mentioned how to create Vesak lanterns that light up the Vesak night. Therefore, it is not necessary to mention how Vesak lanterns are made. These Vesak lanterns made by my wife with great effort have been decorated with various decorations.
Once the candle light is incorporated into these Vesak lanterns, the light bulbs in the house should be turned off. Then you can watch the beauty of Vesak at night with great beauty.
It was difficult to photograph the Vesak lanterns in a row as there was a strong wind throughout the night last night. Even the candle light went out from time to time as the strong winds blew the Vesak lanterns one by one. Occasionally there was heavy rain. Therefore, we even had to remove the Vesak buckets from the park. However, we had the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful Vesak night in the midst of any obstacles. We are all very happy about this.
