Always A Student

in GEMS4 years ago

My woodworker friend Sasan, has accepted me to be his student. My dream of working with wood has been on a progress, thanks to him.

I’ve been giving all I have to learn whatever he has to teach, and of course to be a help in anyway I can.
He’s a patient master, and he uses any opportunity to make me understand the curves of working with wood.

Currently, we are working on a few tables, and a few benches for them. As the days go by, I’m getting to know more and Sasan lets me do some of the job as well, so he doesn’t just teach by theory and that’s what I love about how he’s teaching me. Working with electric saws and drills are not easy, and if you are new to the job, you definitely are prone to errors and mistakes.

For me, it doesn’t go easy when I make a mistake as I’m a perfectionist and want to get everything right in the first try! Though Sasan lets me know that it’s ok to make mistakes and that’s actually part of the process of becoming a woodworker. And I’m like “ Dude come on! You know this, just be patient and the rest is coming” to myself.

All of these errors and corrections, have made my techniques better and he’s starting to trust me with more technical parts. I’m getting to put the wood adhesive, drill on the wood, and also to tighten screws and bang nails on the actual tables and benches we are working on.

Having done those, has made me feel whole and right. To know that you did something in the process of making a piece, feels very rewarding.

The other actually, we got to finish our first bench that I had helped with. While working on it, I wasn’t getting the actual grasp on what we were making until the table was done.

When we turned the bench and put it right beside its table, that was when it hit me. We had produced that, we hadn’t bought it. We actually made that with our own hands and it could not get any more real than that!

We have the capacity to make things form the things that aren’t being used anymore. Being a student of Sasan did teach me that we don’t need fancy and expensive workshops and equipments to make descent and long lasting products.
