Carnival Times / Tiempos de Carnaval
Today I bring you a totally different post, it is not an animation of the ones I always do, not a story either, but a real life story, about the Carnival of Negros y Blancos de Pasto, Colombia, 2024. And this year I didn't go out to play, I have been going to these Carnivals for more than 20 years and enjoying the parades and the games. This year, I did not want to attend more, that does not mean that I did not follow the social networks with the different transmissions and I must admit that the parade on January 6 is great.

The artisans work since March in the creative process of their float and this is what we see on January 6, a work done with love and dedication. Here we find everything, mythological figures, animals, this year we saw many hummingbirds, we also saw a large condor, an animal that characterizes the Andean area and is threatened with extinction. The faces of the characters are almost perfect, they look like real giant beings, with brightness in their eyes and expressions full of drama that captivate the audience.

Realidad o ficción, es una historia increíble, una historia que merecía ser contada en el Carnaval de Negros y Blancos.
One of the winning floats was this one, I did not understand its meaning, until I found out that this image reflected a tsunami that was stopped by a priest and his ostia. The story goes that after a great seismic event in Tumaco, the sea receded, everyone felt fear, then the priest of the place, takes his cup and his wafers and goes to the sea, there he stands in front of this great wave that began to approach and puts in front of it the wafers, as a symbol of God. They say that the sea turned back, there was no tsunami or catastrophe.
Fact or fiction, it is an incredible story, a story that deserved to be told in the Carnival of Blacks and Whites.

These are elaborated with icopor and wire as a base or body, then on these goes cardboard and paper in the technique of paper mache, finally paint and small details that are what give realism to these figures. As I told you at the beginning, they were planned since March 2023, where you must submit a proposal and a miniature model with the design. The institution in charge (Corpocarnaval) approves it and gives the endorsement to be presented on January 6, 2024. Once approved, the materials are purchased and the figures are made little by little.

And it is in December that they put all the parts together and the last week they assemble the trucks that will carry the sculptures. The last week they don't sleep, they don't rest, they work day and night to have the work of art ready for the big parade on January 6. At dawn, while we sleep, all the artisans move with their work to the place of concentration, to start the journey along the path of the Carnival at 9 am.
So much work, so much love put into each piece, is worth it, by the applause of the public, who praises them for the greatness of their works. And it is at that moment that we all say "Long live Pasto Carajo", a colloquial way of referring to the fact that there are no two like this city and its artisans.
