RE: Do we have a scammer on Hive?

in GEMSyesterday (edited)

I wouldn't say it looks legit. I'm a medic from the same country. The first thing that tipped made me believe that this is a probable scam was the fact that she/he paid funds into an opay account. Not just small funds but in millions.. that's sus AF.

Again, another suspicious thing is the price of dialysis.

IMG_7331.jpeg

Currently, in Federal medical center umuahia, Abia state, Nigeria, the price of dialysis is around 70 to 80k (not including other hidden charges in the ward) This hospital is owned by the government and many things are funded by National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). If this patient was under NHIS, her bills will be way more cheaper than 25k naira per dialysis. (I don't really know whether or not NHIS covers the bill for dialysis).

Again, another thing that's sus about this bill is the way it's made (treatment for anemia). Who makes Bill like this? This is pure BS. They just added treatment for anemia (patient's diagnosis) which a hospital will not do. People that does this kind of things are quacks that operate in a small chemist shop. They tell their patient vocally. They don't write it.

A medical bill in Nigeria consist of a lot of things. S/C, utility, syringes used, DRF, e.t.c, not just "treatment for anemia." Each and every thing has its own price. Also, a hospital don't put an option for discount so that you will pay everything. Though at times, patients can beg the hospital to pay a certain amount. Maybe 90% of the original bill.

There are a lot of things here that is really sus to me, but then, I think these are enough points.

My disappointment with all these things is that it's spoiling the already spoilt reputation of Nigerians. The most annoying part of this is that it's a medical scam. What if a legit user encounters an issue that requires help? People will feel reluctant to help that person because of this kind of thing..

I think this receipt is made up too because that looks like somebody's phone number. I'm not a gtb bank user, but then, I dont really think their that account number is legit.

How could people from other countries know this is not how you pay hospital bills in Nigeria? I know there is no health care there, or maybe better said, not for everyone. I mean, we don't receive bills for our taxes because health care takes care of it… but those scames can more from every other countries with no health insurance.

Its kind of difficult to know how a medical bill is done if youre not Nigerian. Even, some Nigerian don't know how a medical bill looks like probably because they don't pay much kind to it.

Actually, Nigeria is more developed than most people think. There is health care for everyone in Nigeria given that they can get themselves to the hospital. We have hospitals, and PHC centers in many corners of the country. Though it may not seem enough, I think its sufficient.

We also have an insurance agency for health, National Health Insurance Scheme.
